Protesting sodomy laws in the United States · 12:38am Apr 30th, 2016
Sodomy is generally described as oral or anal sex. In 17 states, sodomy is illegal. In two of those states, it's illegal in same-sex couples.
If you've read Asking for the Moon, you should know that I really don't like those laws. I live in a state where sodomy is completely legal, but that doesn't change my thoughts on the illegality of sodomy. To protest these laws, my future sex scenes will only have sodomy until these laws are revoked.
To clarify, I have some sex scenes that are finished (and some unfinished) that don't include sodomy. These sex scenes, finished or not, will not be changed to include sodomy. The sex scenes that I haven't started yet will only include sodomy.
Before I say anything else, I believe that what couples choose to do in their bedrooms is no ones business but their own. The laws against sexual experimentation are not needed at all.
However, I do think you are over reacting. These laws may be written down as laws, but when was the last time they were ever enforce? A police officer cannot just barge into the home of a couple and arrest them for performing an oral sexual act. These laws are sitting in a part of the rule book that was written back in a bygone age, and the pages have more dust on them than the tomes of the Pharaohs.
A protest is not needed here, Anathema, it will only prohibit you from what you can write in general. Yes, the laws are wrong, but they are also largely ignored. You need not change what you can write just because these laws are written in a book in some governmental building's basement.
3907060 You do have good points, but I don't think they're enough to make me change my mind. I can't say that I know how the laws are enforced, since I've never lived in a state where sodomy is illegal, nor do I know anybody who has. I'm willing to bet money that there are people that have been arrested because of these laws.
I understand that a protest might not be necessary. This doesn't change the fact that the police can use these laws to arrest people because of what they do in the bedroom. The fact that these laws imply that same-sex couples can't legally have sex also stands.
I should point out that I have been thinking about protesting these laws for almost a month now. I've thought about what the consequences would be. Limiting what I write will be worth it. I'm prepared, and willing, to risk losing followers if it means these laws get more attention.
3908326 Ah, I understand. If you think you can work with such limitations on your writing, then I can only wish you luck.
