I thought the idea that she was a Mary Sue was widespread?
I saw the same thing mentioned on the WoW forums ("... Thrall should go to the SW universe and bump off Rey so he can take back his rightful title of Ultimate Mary Sue.")

It's "widespread" among people like us. I.E. people who are knowledgable about these things, even a little bit. But a vast, vast swathe of people just handwave it.
It's disgusting, and I AM going to rant about it.
