Thus we have the entry into season six of our particular little fandom's very special show.
A different kind of opening following in the trend set from season 5. No horrific evil force has come to destroy the lands of Equestria mobilizing the Elements of Harmony into action. There was a baby, broke the crystal heart, whatever. Kind of danger slice of life crossover. Nothing bad. The foal kind of looks like it belongs in Littlest Pet Shop and is an Alicorn which is apparently unusual, or maybe it’s normal because Celestia and Luna don’t appear to have any foals. Oh apparently they weren’t born Alicorns either so maybe Twilight will live for thousands of years. Who knows? Flurry Heart is acceptable enough.
Enough of all that though. Freaking Starlight Glimmer and Sunburst guys. What an enjoyable look at them together! The classic high school reunion episode set through the lens of ponies. Misunderstandings and miscommunications. Twilight passing on the mantel of magicallest unicorn for a teacher’s cap. Starlight Glimmer doing anything she possibly can to weasel out of doing something emotionally difficult. Littering!
It’s almost odd to see Starlight and Spike wandering around together talking. It feels so much like the first two seasons with friendship lessons and unicorn/dragon/list scenes. It’s like poetry, it rhymes. So yes, Sunburst isn’t a powerful wizard and Starlight did some bad stuff but in the end they can all be friends because that doesn’t change the things they liked about one another. Twilight teaches like her mentor taught her by accident and it works out just fine!
Sunburst enters into not a wizard’s role but rather that of a sage. Something interesting, somepony with the full breadth of knowledge but lacking in the sheer magical prowess needed. Something Starlight has in spades and was show through the medium rather than just told to the audience directly. If they had stayed together you could see the duo they would make and could potentially make in the future of the series.
When things go south towards the end Starlight and Sunburst save the day, but not in the usual have the replacement book and princess win kind of way but in the way of just being a useful and knowledgeable sage. A glance at a spell Sunburst knew just what it was, way it was wrong and had a plan to fix everything.
Rushed at the end but rushed due to the tension that needed things to be rushed rather than just things getting all tied up in a bow.
Starlight and Sunburst best ponies for episode. Would watch again.
Oh, and then freaking Night Light and Twilight Velvet showed up and talked. Grandponies coming to help save the day with a new foal!
