First story upload · 5:21am Mar 6th, 2016
Hi, everypony
I am working on my first story with a partner that right now did not like his name posted.
The story will follow Twilight and the mane 6, as they adventure outside of their home star system.
'Twilight the Princess of friendship, thinking of trying some seal magic to find out what evil is targeting her home.'
Now my question for all of you is, do I upload it now or when it's done?
Just in case you can't post it here you can PM me what you think.
Here is my general advice for first time writers. If you want it, take it. If you do not, then leave it be.
Depending on how long your story is going to be, you will probably want to post in chapters. However, if it's only going to be two or three chapters long, you could post it all in one shot.
First thing's first, get the complete story outline set down. You must have your goal firmly set so you can know where your story is going, and avoid padding the story out unnecessarily. After you know where the story is headed and how it's going to get there, then it's time to flesh out the individual chapters. Have a set goal for each chapter. This will make each chapter seem like an individual shorter story which combines together with the other chapters to create an entire story arc.
Then have your friend and/or someone else pre-read and edit each chapter before it is posted. This means they are not just checking for typos, punctuation, and formatting mistakes, but also for consistency in tone and characterization, as well as making sure everything makes logical sense in general. Make certain to cut out anything that doesn't absolutely need to be there. A wonderful piece of advice I heard a while ago said, "Create your story like it's the best masterpiece ever written, but edit it like it's the worst garbage ever written." This will give the unfettered free flow of ideas that is needed to produce a good story, and then allow you to chop it down to the barest essentials of what the story is trying to do. Brevity is key.
Once you're certain the first two or three chapters are made up properly, post them in one chunk. After that, post a chapter every week (or every two weeks or whatever), to keep your updates consistent. If you only post once a month, that's okay, but keep posting at the same time every month. Consistency of updates will let your readers know what to expect. If you are falling behind and going to miss an update, then post a blog to let people know.
After posting for the first time, pick a few appropriate groups on this website and add your story in. This will help to get your story seen. Don't add it to every group on the website, since that just gets irritating, but put it where applicable. When people start reading and giving you feedback, listen to them, unless they are being obvious trolls. They may see some little mistake that you missed, and then you can go back and correct it. If there is some story aspect that is universally disliked by your readers, you may want to change it or at least come at it from a different angle (unless there is something you are building to by intentionally making your readers dislike that particular aspect).
Finally, in presenting your story on the chapter selection page, it is important to get the introduction just right, to get people interested in reading it. Give a short succinct description that also grabs the readers' attention. Don't give away too much though. You will also need an introductory picture. I don't like it much, but it has become so common on this website, that it is basically a necessity if you want anyone to notice your story. Pick something that would catch your eye, and it will no doubt do the same for others. However, don't lie with the picture, showing something that isn't in the actual story. That will turn readers away. You could go the route of having someone draw something specifically for your story, but for your first story, that's probably taking it too far too fast.
I hope this helps, if only a little.
3795891 So you like "Transformers Equestria Girls"?
