It does spellcheck, but it also checks for more complex things like overuse of adverbs, passive voice, and helps streamline awkward or overly long sentences. Obviously, not everyone needs this, but I figure at least a few people will find it useful, and it might help improve the average fanfic quality if used enough. (It won't fix bad plot or characters, though, so that's still your responsibility. )
