Advice For New Writers #2 · 11:04pm Feb 8th, 2016
Hello everyone of this beloved community where we all gather to share our tales! (Pun not intended. Seriously)
So I wanted to make a part two of my other Advice For New Writers post, for I thought that there is still more things that are needed to cover. And in fact, I was right. I only provided how to fix writer's block, but I didn't proceed further by giving more for you newbies here. So, to fix that, I will make this one dedicated to First Appearances!
Alright so the scenario starts off as you, the writer, just made this amazing story. You believe it's ready to be shown to the public, and when you do, you are ready to accept many supportive comments and an increase to your 'like' count. Unfortunately, you don't get as much attention as you thought you would get. Why? Cause the world completely disregards the quote "Don't judge a book by it's cover" and does the complete opposite. Most people wouldn't be attracted to your fine piece if you don't have the following three correct and "perfect":
1. Title
The Title would be the first thing the reader would see, for it's the name of your whole work. If it's catchy, and is fitting to your description, and basically represents some kind of similarity to your overall premise of your story, they'll take a look at your story. If it's uninteresting or just fairly unrelated in all ways of your story, they will move on to the next story. Now please note: Having a Title that doesn't represent you story's premise is entirely okay to do. It's just a risk to take than going on the safe route. Also Always and I mean ALWAYS capitalize your Title. If it's like this: poppy's Ride HOme, it's out of order and will most likely make the reader turn away. Also having your Title captures the reader's attention.
2. Description
Now this one is the most important part, for it summarizes the premise of your story, the main idea. Gives the reader some idea of what they are walking into. So it's always a good plan to have a fairly detailed summary (That does not five out every little thing of the story, but enough to give the reader what the story is about.). Think of it as a small, small chapter of your story. You want it to not have any spelling, grammatical, capitalization, and punctuation errors. Cause if your description is not "top notch" so to speak, it will drive away any future readers of your story. Heck it will even bring a select few to dislike your story cause of it. Now there is no need to be discouraged. I assure you, that if you get an editor or two, that this would not be a problem whatsoever.
3. Cover Art (Optional)
Now this is a controversial part. Some say that you absolutely need cover art to gain the eyes of many watchers, and in truth, they are right. Sorta. You really don't need cover art, however it will boost the attention to you and your story a lot more than a story without a front picture. The problem being is, not many want to invest a large sum of money to artists, and that is perfectly fine! In fact, you would still have a great chance of gaining views and recognition just as long as numbers one and two are well. If you really want to have a cover art though, but you don't have any money/want to invest any money to artists, there are plenty of pictures on the internet for your disposal. A fair warning though. Always search for non-copyrighted images, for you'll get in a heap of trouble if you claimed a copyrighted picture without permission.
That's about it for this Advice post. I hope this helps out you new writers out there. Remember: Follow the three parts of having a successful first appearance, and if you have a writer's block, JUST DO IT! Have a great night y'all!
