There is a huge difference between understanding and approving.

I would even say that it is important to understand as much as you can about the points of view you disagree with.
Firstly, how can you know they are wrong if you refuse to even consider the opposition?
Secondly, you will know better how to refute the arguments of the other side if you have sought to understand them.
And thirdly, the respect you give to someone when seeking to understand their point of view will make them more willing to listen to you.
