Irritation with progress & reality of polarity · 1:30pm Aug 15th, 2012
So! To those very few who have followed me to keep tabs on Wandering wood, Hello! I figured I should let you three...yeah, okay, just three of ya, You three know what was going on.
Namely, Chapter 3 has been a bitch to write thanks to a flux in crap in my life coupled with fickle muses. Which sucks. royally... However, those same fickle muses did throw me a bone the other night.
it seems that, in my perception, Equestria does not have any actual Evil. None. Nightmare Moon was a overeager girl wanting to be recognized, but didn't realize the harm her eternal night would cause. Discord isn't hostile, but highly out of touch with the mortal perspective, not truly understanding how the mortal ponies feel or experience his brand of 'fun'. Even Chrysalis isn't outright evil. She's certainly not nice, but neither is she outright evil once we account for the fact that her invasion wasn't just to feed her starving kingdom, but her starving SPECIES.
In short my little epiphany revealed to me that Equestria lacks polarization. It's all sunshine and rainbows like Faust wanted, but the darkest it gets is a mild shade with a spooky shadow in the back. True, honest to gods Goodness can not really shine without something as equally black and vile to contrast with it. Likewise, Evil can not be utterly corrupt and despair inducing if there is no hope to break, no dreams to trample upon, No Good to squash.
So I'm gonna boot up another HiE story, one that's just barely based on the chess game setting, but not part of it's cannon in any sense. I'll get that one up sometime before long, and then I'll ping pong between my two stories as I start hitting roadblocks with one. I figure if I can keep the muses on their toes about which fic their being stingy with i'll be able to make some progress... maybe.
