To me, it sounds like Celestia went evil instead of Luna, and she was cast into the sun for 1,000 years after trying to bathe the world in fire. When she comes back, she has nothing but contempt for Equestria and its citizens, and she describes her suffering to the mane six just before they do battle.

I just have to watch my siblings all the time. I've basically been their father since I was 12 years old because my dad wasn't a very good one.
