Or: how not to do a movie based off of an IP that's older than the target demo's parents
The numbers are in, and Jem and the Holograms are going to have to go to the bars to try and recoup their losses on a tour that was cut short by money problems. Normally, l'd be there alongside many of the film's bashers saying it was a bad idea throwing out a movie based on a show that had cult appeal at best. But this is a special case because (l'm assuming) overlord Hasbro was hoping to revitalize the name so they could get their human-shaped hunks of plastic sold by Hauna-Kwanz-Mas. Now, as many of us bronies/pegasisters/whatever know, G1and on of this show, are primarily geared towards little girls so that they can pester their parents into buying whatever bits of molded plastic were advertised in the show. But l digress, the failure of Jem is a bellwether of sorts, because it points out to the head people in HQ in Providence that if you have an IP that's 30+ years old, maybe have a more accessible plan than "let's make a movie to capitalize on a trend that is so stale, we can use it for bricks." Hopefully Hasbro will learn from this debacle and maybe not burn all the bridges when the pony movie arrives in two years
In other noteworthy news, today marks the fortieth anniversary of the Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.
