Zero Reviews: What About Discord · 5:57pm Nov 7th, 2015
Okay, so this is new. I'm talking about the most recent episode as I was able to gather my thoughts on it rather quickly after I finished.
To be honest, I was never a big fan of Discord even back in season 2. Sure, he was a much more dangerous antagonist than Nightmare Moon, but he wasn't intimidating enough to be threatening. His humor, while very funny, didn't really enhance his villainy (like say Kefka or Terumi), and he really didn't leave much of an impact on me.
This feeling of "meh" only got even worse when they brought him back. His humor wasn't any less funny, but the writers started using it as padding for the episodes. You see this in Keep Calm and Flutter On, Three's a Crowd, and Make New Friends but Keep Discord. That's because now that he's no longer evil, humor is all he has. Twilight's Kingdom was the only time we ever saw him when he wasn't joking around.
Rose: And let it be known that serious Discord is kinda scary.
But again, that was a one-time instance. And even though he now understands friendship more, that doesn't stop him from yanking the girls' chains for kicks and giggles. Just for once, I'd like to see an episode where our resident chaos spirit is pursuing a goal or trying to help someone instead of just cracking jokes. Perhaps Fluttershy wants him to be down-to-earth for once for a formal gathering and he has to battle his chaotic nature to do so.
But enough about that, onto the episode.
Much like The One Where Pinkie Pie Knows, there was a lot of padding and filler in this episode. For the first two-thirds of the episode, I was just as confused as Twilight, so that didn't register to me. But the moment Twilight started talking about them being under a spell, I knew where the episode was going. And as much fun as it is seeing Crazy!Twilight again, the reveal that the girls weren't brainwashed and were just joshing with her left a bad taste in my mouth. Thankfully, they rectified this by turning on Discord right after.
Rose: And it was great to see Zecora again.
I also liked the morale. You don't have to do everything with your friends, and it's okay to feel bad about it.
But overall, this episode was like a marshmallow: tasty but not filling. And I don't think I'll rewatch it anytime soon.
Final Verdict: 4/10
And thus the Discord fans grab their pitchforks and torches and come after Zero with a lust for blood.

Uhhhh... Make New Friends but Keep Discord had a Scary Discord scene, too....

Why did Twilight's friends decide to play that kind of joke on her? Seems to be kind of in poor taste, if you ask me.
