Screwball, Screwloose, and Scabby. Screwball, the pony who was accidentally doused in raw Chaos magic. Screwloose, the pony who thinks she's a dog. Scabby, the stallion with a skin condition that leaves him wrapped up like a one-eyed mummy.

Scabby is dragged from the hospital with Screwloose and Screwball as the mares make an escape attempt. At first, he's kept as a hostage, but he eventually joins them as they journey across Equestria, seeing sights that Scabby had never even dreamed of visiting in his days at the hospital. Scabby learns on their journey that without his monthly medicine, he won't last a year on the outside. But he doesn't care and he doesn't tell his new friends. Not until he's on his deathbed, encouraging them to keep on running.
