What did I think about S5 E15: Rarity Investigates? **Probably Spoilers** · 7:17pm Sep 19th, 2015
Alright, two Rarity episodes in a row! Though this time we have a co-star in Rainbow Dash. It's interesting that we don't see these two interact as often as Rarity and Applejack do, so it was bound to be interesting. Seeing Sassy Saddles again so soon was odd, but she wasn't unpleasant, aesthetics aside.
On to the meat of the episode, where Rainbow and Rarity meet Rainbow's idol, the 'living legend' Wonderbolt named Wind Rider. After a 'casual' chat with Spitfire and Rider, Rainbow heads to bed, and her and Rarity part ways.
Not long after, it comes up that Spitfire's mother is sick, so Rainbow, as the Reserve they called in, would 'have' to fill in for her.
Long story short, Spitfire's mom, Stormy Flare, actually shows up to a rehearsal. So, naturally, blame falls on Rainbow, as she is the only one who would have reason to. Then Rarity, having read one-too-many detective novels, decides to investigate the mystery.
It's at this point that I, watching the episode, went through this thought process:
How many side characters were introduced this episode? 1.
If he is guilty, what's his motive? Well, Spitfire said Rainbow was close to breaking his record.
So yeah, it has to be him.
Needless to say, I was right. Rider gets kicked out from the 'Bolts, Dashie flies in his place, happy ever after.
What did I like about this episode?
Rainbow and Rarity interacting. Their dynamic is kinda fun to watch, with the friction coming more out of impatience rather than a strict ideological clash like it does with Applejack. The banter isn't quite as charged, but it was enjoyable.
The Wonderbolts not being jerks! Spitfire and Fleet Foot weren't exactly portrayed well in Rainbow Falls, so it's nice to see the 'Bolts as I remember them from literally everywhere else. It's nice to see they took the lesson to heart. Spitfire and Soarin are always characters I enjoy having on screen.
What didn't I like?
The cheesy Detective Noir shtick was fun for a bit, but it kinda got grating. To the point where I said as I watched, "I swear, if this episode goes all Detective Noir one more time... I'm done." It seemed like it was trying really hard to not only misdirect the audience from the obvious answer, but also use its gimmick to excuse the behavior.
The "oops, did I say that out loud" joke was funny once.
Rarity really did seem to be more concerned with what outfit she was wearing. To see it was 'all part of the process' made no sense.
Overall? It was ok. Nothing amazing.
