It's all a conspiracy! It actually is completely different and was adapted so bronies, being male and gamers, could better understand!

It's actually the story of the PPPP, the Perennial Pretty Pony Pageant,
which, in the pre"war" era, was the first ever to include non pony contestants!

In which Applejack was responsible for accessoires,
Rarity made 42 figurines from her finest fire rubies
Twi designs spells to make ponies feel chilly, making them put on socks and saddles
Fluttershy tries to help underdog zebra contestants by showing them how to blush and squeak like her! (to Dash's chagrin)
Rainbow Dash personally teaches pegasi how to strike sultry poses on clouds!
and Pinkie parties like never before (and restocks her national ball emergency inventory)

In which Applebloom builds pretty cottages for the contest finalists!
Big Macintosh fainted from being shyly flirted at by a particularly bashful zebra.
Celestia was jaded by all the adorability and had to hand down her contest judge position to Luna.

Zebras use unconventional means to deliver socks and porridge and cookies to major pony cities (they need to work on softer landings for the carrier systems)

In which Spike overslept the pageant finale and curses himself for not getting to see Rarity and the others in their final dress designs!
