What will Episode 100 do to the headcanons? WARNING: NONSENSICAL RANT · 10:06pm Jun 3rd, 2015
So the first thing I thought of when I saw that the 100th episode of MLP was going to feature the background ponies I was like "Awesome!" The for a moment I was like "Oh no they're going to ruin them!" Then I heard the voices and I was like "Alright looking good." Then I heard it was going to be about a wedding and I was like "Oh no my ships!" But the ships are safe, for now that is. Well unless your favorite ship involved Cranky or Matilda with other characters apart from each other, then I'm very sorry. So I'm feeling pretty hopeful for these new episodes, I'm just trying to be optimistic. How ever I couldn't help but realize that there is one problem that can not be avoided. A lot of headcanons may get crushed. I'm especially worried that Octavia appearing may completely wreck my shit considering I want to write about her and Vinyl meeting. The same goes for the characters personalities. The Brony/Pegasister community is amazing! They've pieced together incredibly deep characters by only using their physical appearances and actions. For most of us these have become the canon so my big fear is that the true canon may not be able to live up to the fan canon. Of course this is true with Gypsy Pinkie from Friendship is Witchcraft and not many people mind that, but say episode 100 makes Lyra not be obsessed with humans, well that really just won't fly! I already have this huge idea for Vinyl and Octavia's personalities in the story I want to write and I already have this setting I'm super excited about but if the canon series were to present their relationship any other way I just feel like it wouldn't be the same. Take Memories Set In Stone (my story about Trixie at the rock farm) as an example. If there were an episode about that goes in a completely different direction than my story I'd be a bit bummed out. Well what I'm trying to say in all this ranting is that it's amazing that HAsbro is considering the Bronies and making this episode but I hope they leave a lot up to deduction. That's the trait of any good story, the mystery, questions that might never be answered. And if you will answer those questions you need to do an amazing job at it. I mean you have to completely blow anything fans might of thought up right out of the water. Take Adventure Time for example. the lore has always been very impressive and that's mostly because most of the wonder is in our heads. We just know that the world of Adventure Time was created after a nuclear war with asteroids and a bunch of other stuff. We don't get excited because this was told to us, we get excited because there was a freaking nuclear war in a kid's cartoon! The same goes for Vinyl Scratch. She's one of my favorite bg ponies I love her not because of what the series had presented but because she's a freaking DJ pony. And after that the fans did their job. My favorite interpretation is that of YourEnigma who made a series of songs depicting the relationship between her and Octavia. With only that and short descriptions at t6he foot of each video he's done something amazing. And back to Adventure Time, my favorite single aspect of that show is the relationship that Simon and Marceline had. Their past really came out of nowhere, none of the fans could've guessed the Ice King was ever anything more than a shallow character only focused on stealing princesses. Then well, that episode happened. This was a sort of anomaly since the fans weren't expecting it, or more accurately they didn't have any expectations for it. However Bronies will have astronomically high expectations for Hasbro. Well to be honest most of us have tried to lower our expectations a bit just in case. However once it happens we'll have to see whether or not that new canon can surpass the fan canon. I try to sympathize with Hasbro since they are responsible for running what is probably the world's most popular cartoon. But that also comes with some consequences, I'm only talking if one of them and that is the fact that every episode needs to be a little bit better than the previous one. So now that they've reached episode 100 they've decided to reach into the what the fans like.That just so happens to be the things that they themselves came up with. So they have a choice, they can either mirror what they fans came up with as closely as they can or they can try to surpass the fan canon with their own canon. I'm really hoping they do a little of both. Because a series can be good on it's own as shown by a couple of episodes of Adventure Time (because to be honest Adventure Time has really started to go downhill). And the Bronies have shown that the fan canon can be better than the actual canon. But what we have here is an intersection between these two massive forces. An animation studio with professional writers. And a community of people who are a bit too old to be watching a show not meant for them. And it's really amazing how the latter has been able to surpass the prior in some aspects. But we can't forget that it is the original canon that lead us to make things like The Fall Of The Crystal Empire, Lullaby For a Princess, all this freaking fan fiction, and I don't even have to mention the music. So what I'm trying to say is this could go either way. The studio is trying to give the fans what they want. But were not sure they know exactly what we want. So what I'm trying to say is this could go in two directions and both of these are extremes. This could either be the best episode yet totally revolutionizing MLP and who will be the new stars of the show. Or it could be the worst episode ever made destroying multiple ships and amazing fan canons, making Hasbro never touch the bg ponies ever again. I guess we'll see in 10 days from now what'll happen.
I hope Lyra sneaks into her basement and reads about humans. That'd be so funny!
Honestly though, I hope they show more of Mayor Mare or, Mary as I like to call her. She's always there and I hope since she hasn't resigned from her position in the show, I hope they show her in a more leadership role or something. Mayor Mare has slowly worked her way into my third favorite pony of all. Trixie's first followed by Maud with Mayor Mare being a Very Very close third.
