New Potential Canon: King Sombra and The Alicorn Amulet · 4:57am May 25th, 2015
So I don't read the comics, what I know about them is what has been talked about and posted. I like the idea of using it as a semi-canon, basically letting you decide for yourself whether a story is canon is not.
A recent story in the comics gave an origin to King Sombra. I still like the one I came up with when I wrote an idea about changeling origins (which the comics also explained and which was also completely from what I came up with), but the comic has given me a new possible idea.
(some slight spoiler of the comic below fyi)
Even before I knew of the comic and the origin of Sombra in it, I had already started to speculate that he was connected to The Alicorn Amulet. My thinking is that he either created it or had it made, with the intent it making him powerful enough to stand up to Princess Celestia and Princess Luna when he attacked Equestria and tried to take over. Unfortunately they attacked him first before he could use it and sealed him away for a thousand years.
According to the description of the comic, however, Sombra was not actually a pony. He was a shadow creature that was created by a red crystal and sent to take over The Crystal Empire before unleashing an entire army of those like him (called "umbrum").
Reading and thinking about this, I just had an idea. The gem in The Alicorn Amulet is red, and it has the power to corrupt ponies as well as amplify their power. So the red crystal used for the amulet is the same one that gave birth to Sombra originally. Had he been able to use it, not only would it have amplified his power, but would have allowed him to release the umbrum into the world. Instead, it ended up being found and taken by a young unicorn.
So the amulet became a mythical cursed artifact with no known origin. Whenever it is used by a pony, it amplifies their powers and tries to corrupt their minds. Once it has enough influence on the wearer, it will be able to release the umbrum. While it had been able to influence a great many hosts, almost none of them were powerful enough to effect the final plan.
That was until Trixie. With The Alicorn Amulet, Trixie was the first unicorn that would have been powerful enough to open the way for the umbrum to be free. Unfortunately, Trixie removed the amulet before it could fully influence her, allowing her to go free and causing it to once again be locked away without a host.
That, is actually very interesting. That makes a lot of sense.
Well one problem. Size. The crystal Sombra came from was huge. Now it might be the same type of crystal, but it wouldn't be the exact same one.
3102885 Perhaps he broke off a piece of it then?
3103384 ...yeah that would work.
