FIRST - Or maybe, a first and general intro. · 7:11pm Jan 13th, 2012
Hey there.
Welcome to my first blog post anywhere. This post will be a little bit of background and some info on what to expect from me.
First the background.
I am not a writer first of all. But coming here would be good practice I think. I've always wanted to write, and not with this great universe of MLP I can finally get to it.
Coming up with a basic set of characters is pretty hard. By writing about this show, that part is out of the way. Creating a story is pretty hard too, but it's a start.
When I write dialogue, I try to write it with the characters speaking the lines in my mind.
My current work is about 6000 words and growing, being half way though chapter one of maybe ten or so. It is my intention to start big.
That being the case I would really appreciate any proofreading or people who would like to give a few pointers.
One of the more fun things to do was to write quotes from the show and putting them in a new context. See if you can identify them.
I don't really have a favourite character atm. They're all fun in their own way. Twilight was the easiest to write, Pinkie Pie and Rarity the most difficult. Discord is fun too although I didn't write anything with him in it yet. In a "Who's your fav character" poll with my life depending on giving an answer, I'd probably answer Pinkie Pie. Hence my avatar. And that's all I'll say about that.
Usually, in comment sections and on fora I'm a bit of a grammar nazi.
This should mostly benefit the basic language part, but it may effect the story telling and character development in a negative manner.
What to expect
Having read quite a few fanfics, I have a general guideline I'd like to stick to and things I want to avoid.
You'll find:
+ Solid grammar and basic language skills for one.
+ Original story lines
+ Plot
+ Illustrations
+ Lots of references to canon material, as I want to stick close to the original universe and characters. Without rehashing of course.
+ ...
I'll try to avoid the following as much as possible.
- Shipping
- Crossovers
- Gore, porn or anything else in that direction
- Huge plot devices and additional universe content. Most of the adopted stuff will be canon material.
- Internet references, memes, or pop-culture bs. I like that in other people's work sure thing. But that just means the world doesn't need yet another person doing that.
- Death, the afterlife, spirits, far out supernatural stuff etc. Things you don't expect to happen in the episodes will probably not occur in my stories.
- ...
Things I know I probably get quite a few comments on (positive or negative):
* Document structure and formatting.
* Length and comprehensibility.
* Imagery.
* Language. Especially sentence structures. I want to keep my text diverse in a lot of ways. Not using the same 2+ syllable word or structure within 3-5 paragraphs (~1 page) for example.
* ...
Cheers,
