Explorations into the Ideologies of Fandom; Through the Teacher's Eyes · 5:00pm Apr 8th, 2015
In the halls of Western Canada High School, hundreds of students come to learn from their teachers about subjects such as history and math, to drama and journalism. These teachers, as said by Eric K., a journalism teacher at the school, “… are in charge, as teachers, of engaging learners,” one of the ways he suggests is through awareness of current day media.
As such, I interviewed Eric K., as well as theatrical teacher Brittany B. during the month of March about the increasingly popular subject of fandom. Defined by the Oxford dictionary as, “the fans of a particular person, team, fictional series, etc., regarded collectively as a community or subculture.” Through the interview, we discussed the relationship fandoms hold with schools and schooling, as well as how the teachers’ individual subjects are affected and affect the concept of fandom, to better understand the teacher’s perspective of these rapidly appearing subcultures.
