New EQG Shorts: past is not today · 3:17pm Apr 7th, 2015
I cam across theses as I was researching for my Top Ten Friendship Song list. I wanted to write something about it then, but it was the middle of the night. So here is my review of them.
First: (PS SPOILERS)
So the open notes sound like something from another song. So Sunset is on the roof and makes a pose. Then the wind changes; I don't think so. The animators are doing things with the hair, good for them. Sunset at sunset. The music really sets the tone for emotion flashbacks. The running animation around the window could use some work. (Meteor with hand). I do want to mention the change in Sunset's clothes. It's almost midnight; weren't we just as the sun was on the horizon? Aren't the pictures school property; that's vandalism right? Ah friends, there to pick you up. And the jacket comes off again. (the now says 5:47) The magic is forming again, she is flying, and the hair animation. WOAH!! did not expect that. Her hair is super-sayian again. (and the Sun is up again)
I like this. More building on Sunset's part. It she is releasing those feeling about her past, and redeeming herself. The animation is good, show quality, but good. Sunset has really grown. Other than Rarity, (who mostly stats the same) Sunset has changed styles. Her bad girl style, the black leather jacket, purple shirt with cutiemark, orange skirt, and knee-high black boots with purple has now changed to a dark navy blue jacket, a blue blouse with yellow underlay, blue leggings and calf-high boots with the same style as her jacket.
Then the Phoenix wings at the end (is she a pony or a phoenix). Her finaly redemtion. She is 'reborn' from the ashes of her old actions, and she will not be defined from them. That last scene reminds me of when Aang and Zuko go to the Sun Warriors to re/learn firing bending. (3:18)
Ishi Rudell stated that Sunset Shimmer's phoenix-like appearance at the end of My Past is Not Today was a visual metaphor and that "her hair is lighter... We wanted to tone her color intensity down a bit with the design of her new outfit."
David Ingram has still got it. The up beat puts us on a happy note and makes it root for Sunset (if we aren't already). And Rebecca Shoichet's voice is perfect.
(and I have run out of ideas, Great! I will edit when i get them back)
