As you all know, Every Ship Is Best Ship, but some ships are just a teensy bit better than others. Like all ships with Rarity in them. Today we shall talk about one of those ships that is a teensy bit better than others. That ship goes by a few different names. RariTwi, RariLight, TwiRity, what have you. It goes by Rarilight most of the time, so I'll refer to it as that for simplicity reasons.
All ships have different types of stories they do best, and a different way of the two ponies interacting with each other that people find cute/funny/whatever. AppleDash is a friendly rivalry that lends itself well to comedy, Twixie has foe yay, and RariJack is opposites attracting. Rarilight has a dynamic that I'm sure most of you are familiar with: a lady and her knight.
Rarity is an upper-class girl. That's what she defines herself as and what ponies (including Twilight) see her as. Twilight is still pretty insecure in herself even after S4, possibly even more so now that she has wings and is now a role model for young fillies and colts everywhere. If Twilight had feelings for Rarity, they would most likely manifest from looking up to Rarity as secure, outgoing, and ladylike (all things a princess of Equestria should be). As such, Twilight is usually the Lady in Rarilight tales.
Likewise, if Rarity had feelings for Twilight, they would probably manifest out of looking up to her. A good friend, a princess, an amazing magician, absolutely adorable - Twi has everything going for her and doesn't seem to realize it. A Rarity who is in love with Twilight would most likely take it upon herself to show Twilight how super special she is, and insist on giving her lessons in princess-ing. Rarity is usually the Knight.
But you know what's really cool? These positions could be reversed and it can still work. Twilight could also see Rarity as a lady and then want to protect her, be the knight to her lady, much like Spike's crush on Rares. (I could totally see Twilight attempting to take Rarity out on an amazing classy date at some restaurant and fumbling it horribly. I feel bad for thinking that'd be adorable. <3) And Rarity could embrace this and want Twilight to be her knight, due to the aforementioned feels for Twi. This kind of easily-reversible dynamic is called Riba or Reba in Yaoi circles, or a reversible couple, where the guys in love could switch roles (The Seme(Knight) could also be the Uke(Lady) and vice versa) and it could still work.
What kind of story is this ship good at? Um...Black Butler crossovers? (reader, if you wrote a BB crossover starring Rarity and Twi I would love you forever <3)
But like I said before, you could easily ship Rare with Twi by having Rarity be the Knight and Twi be the Lady. Picture this: Twilight has to go to Canterlot to give a speech or something. After the speech, there's a fancy dinner and ball. Twilight doesn't know a darned thing about this stuff, so she consults Rarity. Rarity decides to go with her to Canterlot and be her escort to make sure she does alright and give her some moral support. Rumors fly that they are a couple, and then they go an a quest to squash the rumors and romance happens along the way. Or something. (I would totally read that.)
Aaand that's my little RariLight spiel done. Hope it made sense.
Though RariTwiPie is still the OT3.
Like I said, some ships are better than others. This one is God-Tier.
