I can't not giggle at this because there's a similar impulse I get every time I see those. And sometimes it works, but a lot of the time the content of the story doesn't preclude the characters being their present-canon age. It's like a guessing game at that point whether the author really wanted to write foalcon and was just making an attempt to "safen" the whole project.
