an actual Rainbow Rocks review. · 7:02pm Sep 28th, 2014
Now then, since I've had time to actually sit and think about my thoughts on the movie, here's a review. This will have some more spoiler esc. content, so viewer beware.you're in for a scare. Sorry had to.
Now then, Rainbow Rocks, or RR, starts with a small scene in the human world showing off what seems to be reverse changelings, who're feeding off of hatred instead of love.
Forward through some exposition and a time skip, and we're watching the students of CHS preparing some kind of musical contest. Here we see Sunset Shimmer attempting to help the CMC with their poster, and being promptly rejected. The rest of the scene does an excellent job at showing how Sunset has changed, alongside how the student body feels about her. They do a great job at setting the scene and characters within this first scene, and proceed to show other changes within the next ten minutes or so.
Skip to the villain's introductions, Sunset Shimmer attempts to show the three reverse changelings around the school, believing that they're just normal students. As we see their personalities, I immediately knew that these three were going to be the Discord of the human world.
Skipping again, we reach our first song. Ooooh boy the songs. After four seasons and a movie of cheerful, pop songs it was refreshing, and honestly amazing to see a darker song. I honestly felt like the villain songs were so much better than even this day, and fit the scene so well.
Some more talking and mane six, rather mane five plus Sunset Shimmer, and we're seeing a literal tele-book. That's right, a book that basically sends text messages through different dimensions.
Rest of the movie: Twilight creates a perma-portal that could become canon, Sunset Shimmer gets a nice amount of character development, and the sirens get more amazing songs.
For those wondering, just about every background character gets a cameo at the least. Derpy attempts to play what looks like a two man saw using a bow, Octavia gets wrecked by Trixie, I think, and Bulk Biceps loves the violin.
Also Maud gets a short scene, and we get more Star Swirl back story.
As for the running jokes that were all over the first movie, we're only getting a 20% cooler joke.
As for my verdict, I'd say a 9/10. There are some things the movie could have improved on, like Twilight's character being a bit off, but alot of it is shadowed in the good stuff. Though reviewing does mean I have to look at the negatives more than others. So I can't give it a perfect score.
The only other thing I need to say is to wait till the end of the credits for a nice little teaser.
