Some thoughts about EPs · 3:33am Sep 19th, 2014
So, anyway I was watching... well, I was watching THIS (warning, language) and I decided to post a comment... a comment with over 31 lines. Doi, when I start working on headcanon, I go with a whole head-HOWITZER!
My comment I copy and paste here...
My headcanon is that the EPs in Equestria (not the OCs) basically outnumber the other two by about 10:1:1. This is partly from what I see as having gone on throughout history, as well as an explanation for Twilight's otherwise plothole (no dirty thoughts, you know what I mean) remark about Ponyville being started by Earth ponies, so for hundreds of years they haven't used magic to wrap up winter. It makes sense if she wasn't hip to Ponyville's exact history then (she didn't know how old it was) but she WAS aware of several OTHER Earth Pony settlements of which did exactly as she said, just that Ponyville specifically wasn't quite as old as she thought it was. In fact, in Ponyville, a place where different kinds of ponies can be friends (or so Scootaloo put it) we see a great abundance of (multi colored) Earth Ponies! The EPs are basically ALL OVER THE PLACE! It's just the EP-OC/Ps that are rare.
A minor headcanon, I think that the EPs are also especially prone to "herd mentality", which is where they try to join the crowd, even if it's not entirely safe, smart, or sane. Several commentors have... er, commented... that ponyville's inhabitants keep shifting from one mood to the other, praising Applejack in one episode (applebuck season) and then later making fun of her when Trixy ties her up with her own rope (boast busters), why the sudden shift? herd-mentality.
I also think about this way, an EP can do anything any pony can that doesn't require magic or flight, as such, flight and magic are basically the only avenues wherein the other two can really excel, any other occupation and they've got competition to worry about. Also the existence of the Cutie Mark makes things a little... different, limiting what a pony is good at and not good at. Specifically, as Twilight herself in SEASON ONE pointed out, most unicorns are basically only good at doing magic specifically geared towards their special talent. The same can be basically assumed for the pegasi, though as they have a MAJOR industry controlling the weather, it just ends up looking like they've all got the same special talent for weather much the same way how, if you look at workers in a factory, most of them appear identical through uniforms and stuff, even when their actual jobs duties and positions amongst themselves can differ greatly.
Consider that RD's special talent involves racing, not being a weather pony, that gig is only what she does to pay the bills... which kinda explains why we see her slacking on the first episode, it's not what she wants to do, it's what she has to do. Pinkiepie might have a cutie mark of throwing parties, but she's busy learning how to bake (and occasionally watch over a pair of mischievous foals).
Another piece of headcanon that just came back to me is Blueblood's "prince" thing. To me, there is a definite and active "royal" class that wants to... well, it wants what any royal class wants, more power of course, that includes association with the ruling princess(s) so the title of "prince" I say is mostly just an honorary one.
I think that's it for now, keep dreaming.
