Managing the Flood of Pony, Part II

You may have noticed my previous post about how I manage the huge number of stories. Since then, FiMFiction added the Library, which is an amazing update. Here's how I manage things now.

The Favorite list is now used only for complete stories that I really like. I try to only add the best stories here. When recommending stories to friends, I look at this list.

    Managing the Flood of Pony

I read a lot of pony fanfiction. However, after some very simple, second grade level statistics, I have reached the conclusion that I am adding more stories to my read later list than I read.

I've always liked to complete things and not leave anything unexplored. I used to see an interesting fic and put it on the list, but worry that I'd never get to it and I'd be missing out on something.

I mean, really. There's chemistry there. Or geology. Whatever. Probably the two beings in Equestria with the most thorough combined experience with stone.

Shippers, feel free to steal my idea and set sail for insanity.

Managing the Flood of Pony · 6:25am Sep 16th, 2014

I read a lot of pony fanfiction. However, after some very simple, second grade level statistics, I have reached the conclusion that I am adding more stories to my read later list than I read.

I've always liked to complete things and not leave anything unexplored. I used to see an interesting fic and put it on the list, but worry that I'd never get to it and I'd be missing out on something.

I've decided this isn't a problem.

Why? Because I can never get to it all. I'll never run out. So why worry if I miss a great one? Two more will take its place.

I've developed a system for managing the flood. I add everything that grabs my interest to the read later list, then sort it by heat and/or rating when I sit down to read. At that time, I read the most popular and/or high rated stories. When I'm done, I'll favorite it and remove it from the read later list. If there's a sequel, I'll add it and favorite it. Similarly, I'll favorite any (including incomplete ones) that look exceptionally interesting and/or relevant, just as a more specific method to track them and see when they're completed. I wish FiMFiction had some more powerful options to track stories, like sorting by read/unread chapters, creating multiple reading lists, and other such things, but until then I manage.

Does anyone have any other tricks to keep track of stories? Discuss in the comments if you wish.
