A Dalek, if your friend asked you to describe them what would you say. For me I would say. "Basicaly it's a yelling trash can with a eggbeater and plunger for weapons." What would my friends reaction be. "HA HA HA HA HA!"
Yes, that what that conversation would look like. Now I bring this up because, what is is about the Daleks that have made them so popular, so terrifying, and also the longest lasting Doctor Who villain of the entire franchise. Well, obviously first off, I think the design does have something to do with, I mean it is so unique, there is no other creature in science fiction quiet like this out there, at least to my knowledge. But more importantly another reason for the Daleks longevity is not necessarily the look of a Dalek, but the idea of a Dalek. The fact that this...this yelling trashcan ... is a well armed, insane, killing machine that you have no chance of out running or surviving attack form....that is terrifying. If you ever ran into a Dalek your dead, there is no hope, or sure maybe you can outrun a Cyberman, maybe you could flee from a Sontaran, but a Dalek, no...there is no hope when dealing with a Dalek, it will never stop hunting, and trying to kill you until you are EX-TER-MIN-AT-ED!!!! Another thing that have made the Daleks popular is just their ability to survive, the fact that even when you think you've destroyed them all, they still find a way to survive and return even more powerful than ever before. These Daleks, are little blobs of hatred that never give up, never surrender, and will find a way to EX-TER-MIN-ATE the entire universe, and even go as far as destroying all of reality itself to achieve their goals!
These are some of the reasons I think that make the Dalek special, and make them the greatest Villains not just in Doctor Who, but in all of science fiction. Now I leave you with this quote.
We are entombed, but we live on. This is only the beginning. We will prepare. We will grow stronger. When the time is right, we will emerge and take our rightful place as the supreme power of the universe!
