Just a theory · 11:14pm Aug 25th, 2014
A theory of mine.
This has been buzzing through my mind for a while now, and so I am going to explain what it is in the best way possible. But before we begin, I have to say this.
NOTE: this theory is just for fun and curiosity, it is not supposed to be taken seriously. And if it is, then whatever.
*aheam*
Is gods eater burst the inspiration for attack on titian?
Allow me to explain, gods eater burst does share some things with attack on titian. Keyword being some, so I shall now explain the reasons why. Now the difference is that gods eater burst is a psp video game. Where as attack on Titan is a manga. Now even though gods eater burst came first on March 15, 2011, and attack on Titan came out on August 8, 2014. I think that gods eater burst was the inspiration that created attack on Titan. But let's see why that is.
1. The story
Now this is very easy, gods eater bursts story is very meh.
Let's take a look:
The story revolves around the Hero character (named and customized by the Player) as he joins Fenrir Far East Branch alongside Kota after discovering that he is a new-type God Eater. Soon after he joins he is assigned under Lindow, leader of the first unit, in which he advises them to not die and to run when needed. He eventually meets more members of first unit: Sakuya and Soma along with their instructor, Dr. Sakaki. When a second new-type God Eater, Alisa, joined first unit on a mission, a group of Aragami ambushed them and Alisa experienced a physiological episode and accidentally trapped Lindow. The rest of first unit was able to escape but Lindow was left behind. After they returned to base, Alisa had been treated for her episodes. It was then revealed that they are due to her childhood trauma of watching her parents die by an Aragami. The Hero was able to calm her down and she was able to return to first unit. Sakuya after grieving for the missing Lindow, found a secret message from him but was inaccessible without Lindow's bracelet. The Hero is then promoted as the new leader of first unit, in which the director of Fenrir Far East Branch, Johannes attempts to use him in top secret missions in efforts for something known as the "singularity". Dr. Sakaki soon discovered deceived the Director into searching for the singularity in Europe after telling him that a mysterious Aragami appeared there and leaving Dr.Sakaki in-charge. Dr. Sakaki sent the Hero and Soma them to secret mission eventually discovering a human-like Aragami named Shio. As they keep Shio a secret from the Director and learn from her, first unit have been send to search missions for Lindow after his bracelet has been activated. Eventually Sakuya had found his bracelet and was able to access Lindow's secret message. Sakuya accesses the message and discovers that Lindow was investigating Johannes secret project known as Project Aegis.
Yeah, it's not bad just meh.
Now let's compare that with attack on titans story: The story initially centers on Eren Yeager, his adoptive sister Mikasa Ackerman, and their childhood friend Armin Arlert, who join the military to fight the Titans after their home town is invaded and Eren's mother is eaten. As the story progresses, the truth behind the origin of the Titans arises and the story shifts to one about political subterfuge.
As you can see, attack on titans story is very fleshed out, where as gods eater bursts story is just a simple ok but mostly meh.
2. Characters
This is were I believe that both gods eater burst and attack on Titan are at a tie, as they both have a lot of good characters.
But let's focus on two of them.
Attack on titans main character:
Eren Yeager
The protagonist of the series, who after witnessing his mother being devoured by a Titan dedicates the rest of his life to their eradication.
This is not bad, he has a backstory, and a reason to fight against the enemy.
(I apologize for not putting out more information)
Now for gods eater bursts main character
Yuu aka you the player
The player (プレイヤー Pureiyā?) is a new recruit on Far East Branch who is assigned as a member of the first unit of God Eaters.[7] The player is also the first New-Type God Eater to join the Far East Branch. In various God Eater media, the male player's default name is revealed to be Yuu Kannagi (神薙 ユウ Kannagi Yū?).
Yes that's right. You play a part in the story, were as in attack on Titan you watch the characters fight the titans and tell yourself "I want to fight the titans". In gods eater burst you get to live that when you fight the Aragami. Now as for the backstory to why your character is fighting the aragami, well there is none. Your character has no backstory other than the fact that you are looking for a job. Yea...that's a real good reason to fight the aragami, because you get paid for killing them.......yay.
(No I'm not kidding, the real reason the main character in gods eater burst is joining the Far East branch is just to get a job)
Ok now with this, attack on Titan has points for giving is main character a backstory and a real reason to fight the titans. But gods eater burst does it better because it puts you the player into the story, were you get to fight to save humanity.
3. The titans / aragami
Ok now onto the enemies of both franchises. Attack on Titan has well the titans, as gods eater burst has the aragami.
Let's compare the two:
The titans
The Titans (巨人 Kyojin) are the primary antagonists of the series. They are giant creatures that resemble male humans in form, although lacking reproductive organs.[ch. 4] They can range in height from 3 to 15 meters (9.8–49.2 ft). Despite their enormous strength and toughness, Titans' bodies are unnaturally light for their size. Their primary objective is to kill and eat humans, as they show no interest in attacking other animals. However, they do not require food or drink. They have hard skin and regenerative abilities, and can only be killed by causing a deep incision at the nape of the neck. They have high body temperatures, causing them to emit steam.
And now the aragami
An Aragami (荒神 "violent god") is actually a colony of hundreds of thousands of cells uniting under a cell core. These cells, called "Oracle Cells", are the only type of cell in an Aragami forming flesh, blood and bone all the same. Oracle cells have a devouring nature which caused them to spread and devour everything in their path. However, Oracle cells do not evolve like normal cells do; in fact, each Oracle cell in existence is exactly the same as it was before the outbreak. The core is the command center over the entire colony while the individual groups of cells form working parts of the entity such as an eye, fang, or tail. The only way to truly kill an Aragami is to extract the core, thus making all the normal cells lose their cohesion. The only weapon capable of doing this (whilst still being portable) is the God Arc, which removes it by "devouring" the Aragami.
Generally violent in nature, Aragami only crave to consume. This is how they can adapt and evolve to fit new surroundings; they can devour native scenery and Aragami in the area until the Aragami's cells adapt to the conditions. Their desire to consume any sort or matter is controlled by the Bias Factor; an Aragami will refrain from eating anything that is highly similar to its own being, unless they are extremely desperate, turned rogue or became somewhat far more unstable. This is a mutation that results in different Aragami of the similar relation. Notably, the Aragami seem to be starting to evolve in new ways: some newer Aragami are starting to resemble humans.
The way I see it, I believe that the aragami are more of a threat than the titans. Mostly because the aragami are able to evolve quicker than the titans. Plus were the only way to kill the titans is to cut the back of the neck, here with the aragami you have to kill it with another aragami in a way. See unlike the titans the aragami have to be killed by another aragami. However this does raise questions. Unlike the Vertical Maneuvering Equipment (立体機動装置 Rittai Kidō Sōchi?) which allows trained humans to navigate quickly in a three-dimensional space. Although it permits great mobility to a skilled user, it carries a large risk of overtaxing the muscles, requiring extensive physical conditioning and agility; however, it is the most effective equipment to kill a Titan.
The god arc needs more explaining, like when was the first one made? Or how did the humans find out about this? And how was the original one effective against the aragami? Sadly these questions are never answered.
4. Weapons
Attack on Titan: The Three Dimensional Maneuver Gear (立体機動装置 Rittai kidō sōchi?), also called Vertical Maneuvering Equipment or Omni-directional Mobility Gear, is a set of gear developed by humans that allows great mobility when facing the Titans in combat. The gear allows the user to fight in a 3D space as opposed to a 2D one. The gear itself takes the form of a body harness that encompasses much of the body below the neck. Although the Gear can grant a skilled user tremendous mobility, it is a demanding art that requires strength, and skill, both of which must be honed through constant practice. Some tools involved in the apparatus include:
Handgrips
Piston-shot grapple-hooks
Gas powered mechanism
Iron Wire Propeller with Plug in Blades
Origin: The circumstances regarding the creation of the 3DMG are detailed in the prequel novel Before The Fall. 3DMG was invented between 775 (year of the Titan attack and BTF's prologue) and 788 (13 years later) by Angel Aaltonen, a first-class weapons craftsman who worked closely with the Survey Corps.
Usage and dangers: Three-dimensional maneuver device training is a rigorous process that allows humans, which are limited to two-dimensional movements, to adapt to movement in the third dimension.
Great physical strength, particularly in the legs, coupled with spatial recognition abilites, as well as the mental strength to not waver in the midst of a panic, are crucial qualities.
One of the first things done after enlisting in training is the 3D Maneuver Gear aptitude evaluation. Those unable to remain upright are dismissed.
"Those incapable [of staying upright] aren't suited to even be used as decoys!"
Three years of training is needed before officially becoming a soldier. Many run away or are driven out before graduating. The training is so intense that some people actually die during the process.
Gods eater burst: God Arcs are mechanical weapons that are infused with Oracle Cells.
In short, the God Arc is actually an Aragami itself,
with an artificial man-made core called the Artificial CNS.
It is currently the only weapon capable of eradicating the Aragami.
The God Arc's strength can be temporarily boosted by devouring an Aragami.
The God Arc is a complex weapon. As it is an Aragami, it is made of Oracle cells, the only thing that can harm them. The first form of God Arc was in the form of a gun that shot converted Oracle Shots. At first, these guns were no bigger than a pistol, due to the cores being converted coming from Aragami the size of small mammals. However, with these pistols, the God Eaters were able to take down bigger Aragami such as Ogretails. In a process similar to natural evolution, the God Arcs then evolved to the size seen today. Next in development was a God Arc made in the shape of a blade. Typically, blades could not harm Aragami due to the bonds between cells being too strong to unbind. However, with God Arc blades, Oracle Cells are lined up along the blade's edge, which allow the blade to cut the bonds and harm the Aragami.
Dangers: Being an Aragami, the God Arc still has the urge to devour, and when it is in storage it will start to exhibit such behaviour. It is also completely linked to its compatible God Eater; if a God Arc is wielded by a non-compatible God Eater its Oracle cells will begin to devour them. Since there is no recorded case of a God Eater being compatible with two God Arcs, this is a rule with no exceptions.
Protagonist (God Eater) learns this the hard way when fighting off a Vajratail in the Fenrir HQ; they recklessly decide to use Lindow's God Arc. This severely injures them, and renders them temporarily comatose. Later, when they use it again, their left arm shows signs of Aragami corruption similar to Lindow's, and they then dual-wield Lindow's God Arc and their own - a unique feat that has never occurred in the past.
A human who suffers Aragami infection from their God Arc is quite hard to kill once they turn full Aragami. The Oracle Cells mutate to form a structure unique to them, and only them. This renders them invulnerable to all weapons except their own former Arc. This means that the Aragami is generally safe from threat, due to the details above. Only once has such an infection occurred, and it was defeated by a similarly improbable event.
Ok this part is a lot to read, but this is mostly up to you to see which one is better.
Now this is all of what I have written down so far, so in case I missed anything else please tell me. But now the question remains.
Is gods eater burst the inspiration for attack on Titan? That question is something you'll have to answer for yourself.
