Seriously, this episode:
"4th Celestrial Era..."-Dating System based of the idea of an era. Actual dating of history now available. i.e. year 125 of the Unification Era.
"EUP Guard..."-Name for the royal guard and subsequent police force. i.e. EUPPF Earth pony, Unicorn, and Pegasi Police Force.
"General Firefly..."-There she is!
Now all we need to do is figure out how many years are in an actual era...
P.S. my guess is 200.
Edit: Have been corrected on the matter of eras.
An era doesn't last a set amount of time, they begin/end based upon distinct events in history.
Are you kidding? We're talking notes, doodles, and studying transcripts on this end.
I agree with Pnakotic, it's kind of like the Eras from the Elder Scolls series, example (I'm not sure if I'm right about this), I'm pretty sure the Third Era ended at the Oblivion Crisis.
I agree with 1986263
In my opinion, eras would work as in the Lord of the Ring. Therefore their length is variable.
For example, the first Celestial Era would start with the unification of ponykind against the Windigos. The second would start with the discovery of the Elements of Armony and the defeat of Discord, the fourth would be the banishment to the moon of Princess Luna, the fifth would be her return.
Concerning the third, who knows :D
At least we know that the Fourth Celestial Era had lasted for one thousand years.

litteraly the answer, In all likelihood the event we know of that would be worthy of decreeing new eras based on them would be the founding of Equestria, the reign of Discord, the rule of the sisters, Luna's banishment, and her return, but there could be others we events of that magnitude we never learned of.
To date, our current mesurment of time we have divided history into two eras, Common era and before common era, everything that takes place before the year 0 of our current calender.
Edit: the really interesting thing here is that it is the FOURTH celestial era, has control of the sun changed hoofs four times since the days of being controlled by unicorns? Is Celestia like a phoenix, dieing when her time is past, only to rise from the ashes after some time has past (note to self, this would make a cool story)?
So a pegasus's emotion can affect their magic...?
Which episode are we talking here?
