The Thoughts Of FanFiction · 6:46pm Mar 15th, 2014
I don't know what the title is supposed to say, but I don't give a f**k right now. It has come to my attention that some of the greatest stories in human history (War and Peace, Gone With the Wind, anything written by Stephen King) all have some of the darkest themes imaginable. I don't typically write about things in the fandom that urck me the wrong way, but I just saw one of the greatest fanfictions in history go from twenty views and six likes with only two dislikes to two hundred and fifty views, eight likes, and forty-seven dislikes in the matter of twelve hours. I will not put the link or the title because I am afraid that the author will only receive more unwarranted hatred for their story.
The reason why it did so poorly, I believe, is that people only want to read funny stories and when they read something that is dark, sad, realistic, or even remotely thought provoking, people automatically start to hate it and it never gets much traction, therefore discouraging more sublime works from that author. It is sad, but I must admit that I have done that too.
Seeing as how I only have thirteen followers, this blog won't get much attention, but I need to say this: the greatest pieces of literature are never designed to make someone laugh. If any of you have ever read Shakespeare, his plays are not meant to be funny; they are meant to be serious and interesting. Sure there are laughs here and there, but they are always placed passively throughout his plays.
I believe that this isn't a fault of the fandom, but rather society. I know that everyone blames society for everything nowadays, but if you look at the massive amounts of comedies being made recently, romantic or otherwise, people have only wanted to make funny writing. Back in the fifties through seventies when some of the greatest songwriters, artists, creative writers, etc were blooming out, there works were never designed specifically for laughter, and we still remember them all today.
I'm writing this in a blog because I want anybody who's still reading this to go to the Browse bar and click the tag "Dark" or "Sad" and avoid "Comedy". Just read anything that looks interesting and if you actually have an opinion on it that could help improve the writer, leave it in the comments. If you do not like, do NOT press that dislike button. Just leave a comment saying you did not enjoy it and why. This way, others who might like it instead of you won't be discouraged by the number of dislikes.
Please help me. We all need a break, and those who write dark stories need vacations. Give them that vacation.
