The question has come up as to why flying beings would be using airships, there are several answers to this.
1: It's cool and lets me do complex visual sequences which is something I need to work on
2: You can't bring artillery in by hand.
3: It's a natural idea that each side would want to one up the other. First they would use ranged weapons, then armour to deflect that, then vehicles to carry larger weapons, and then larger vehicles to defeat those...
4: When you have to cross a continent in a hurry, wings aren't going to cut it. The griffons also live quite a ways away so they would need to use vehicles so that they wouldn't arrive at their target dead tired. Same goes for the ponies when they have to cross a large distance.
