Story Idea #1 - Lovesickness (Flash Sentry/Shining Armor) · 10:20am Dec 2nd, 2013
Ever since I read An Upside Down Love Triangle (NSFW), I've totally been shipping Shining Flash. Or is that Flashing Armor? Oh, Flashy Armor. Sadly, not much fic for it. So have a story idea!
Lovesickness
Or: Flash Sentry the Student of Love
Flash Sentry is moping around with a broken heart (again) when Princess Cadance catches him in his moment of lovesickness. Aghast at his angst, the Princess of Love takes a leaf from Celestia's book and makes Flash her 'love student', sending him on indefinite assignment to Ponyville until he manages to mend his heart.
This means he's going to be sending weekly 'love reports' and keeping up correspondence with Cadance to help him along with his love woes. Which will be difficult considering the one he's in love with is Shining Armor, her husband. Awkwaaaaard.
Oh, and he's going to be rooming with Twilight Sparkle! How else is he going to get ahold of Spike so he can send his love reports to Cadance? He's also assigned to be her 'bodyguard' which is pretty much an excuse because Twilight has her friends and kicks all kinds of flank. And maybe, just maybe, Twilight develops her own crush on him which will sadly be unrequited because Flash is in love with her brother. More awkwaaaaard.
In my head, Flash Sentry is one of those guys who's been posted with Shining Armor a lot of times. He's been friends with the slightly older stallion since military academy and developed a crush on him which slowly turned into full-out love as their friendship progressed. He's been trying to confess his feelings but never mustered up the courage when Shining started dating Cadance.
He's a bit angry at himself for losing his chance (he totally had first dibs) but he's just content to see him happy with Cadance. Even if it means his love will remain unrequited and saaaaad. And now all those years of repressing his love catches up to him, giving him Lovesickness. Which may be metaphorical or literal (who knows with Cadance). Now he has to deal with all his feels!
One of the reasons is despite how kind and helpful he is, he rarely acts upon it for himself. It might come from being a guardspony, always putting others ahead of himself, but he hates showing his weakness and doesn't want to inconvenience anyone with his failings. Shining Armor is one of the few ponies he can let his guard down and let himself be taken care of instead. D'aww.
Anyway, Flash Sentry departs for Ponyville (packing all the pictures of him and Shining of course) and departs on a journey . . . OF LOVE!
P.S. I'm curious as to what Flash's cutie mark means. A lightning bolt in front of a shield? I mean, I associate that with 'breaking through defenses' but that doesn't mesh well with him being a guardspony. His name might be a hint as to his talent though, since 'Flash Sentry' sounds like someone who watches for danger and quickly warns others. 'Lightning defense' sounds cool though. Maybe he's an expert in rapid aerial defense as compared to Shining's steadfast ground defense? Ooh, blitzkrieg!
BLITZKRIEG 1 : war conducted with great speed and force; specifically : a violent surprise offensive by massed air forces and mechanized ground forces in close coordination.
Blitz means 'Flash' or 'Lightning' in German. 'Krieg' which means 'war' is a bit too offensive-minded in my mind. Perhaps Wache for 'Sentry' or 'Watch' or Wehr for 'Defense'. So Blitzwache or Blitzwehr. Again, 'Lightning Defense' sounds very cool. Perhaps the reason he's so high-ranked is because he's developed this entire battle strategy, one that puts his specialty to be compatible with Shining's own?
In any case, being an expert in fast aerial maneuvers sounds like a good reason for Rainbow Dash to get competitive. He's got to have some reason for being so high-ranked, right?
Dude, that sounds so cash. The Flash Sentry and story about him you envision sound like quite the interesting read. It's rad of you to give him a well thought-out character. You do think, though, that the Flash Sentry portrayed in Equestria Girls was shoehorned in for no reason but to have a love interest to sell, added nothing to the plot, and was horrendously badly written, right? Because if you don't believe that, I'm afraid this friendship we were just starting is off.
2276752 The human Flash Sentry is, yes. We know little about the pony. And that's exactly the reason I chose him. :P Well, that and because he's controversial and a lot of people hate him. I enjoy that. (That's why Blueblood is another pony I like a lot.)
I wrote this up back when I hadn't read the Shining Armor and Cadance relationship comic, so some of this is out-of-date. It's still definitely an idea I want to come back to though.

And the Normal Norman General's Brad is a pretty cool guy, too.
