Classic Animated Shorts: The Brave Little Tailor · 12:10am Nov 7th, 2013

Today, I feel like talking about in my opinion, one of the greatest cartoon shorts of all time; The Brave Little Tailor.

The short takes place long ago, where an enormous giant is on the loose in a kingdom! While that’s going on, Mickey Mouse who’s playing a tailor kills seven flies with one blow. Unfortunately, he gets excited about this at the wrong time.

Peasant (talking with friends): Say, did you ever kill a giant?
Mickey (interjecting unwittingly): I killed seven (flies) with one blow!
Peasants: SEVEN?!

Gossip soon spreads about Mickey killing seven giants with one blow, until the king summons Mickey and appoints him ‘Royal High Killer of the Giant’. With no way out, Mickey now has to go out and catch the mighty giant.

There are so many fascinating things about this cartoon. One is that this is one of the few shorts that were made a year after the ultimate landmark in animation, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. And it really shows that things were just getting started.

Another interesting fact is that this is one of the last time Mickey Mouse has big dot eyes, and before he got the eyes we know today.

And another thing is the animation. The animation in this short is really, really good. It was phenomenal for its time, and even by today’s standards. It’s cool since two of the people working on this are two of my favorite animators, Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston. There two scenes where they individually animated all the characters, now that's talent. RIP, you guys.

I honestly don’t know what to say about this short. I loved it as a kid, I love it now. If you haven’t seen it, check it out and see some really great animation.
