NaNoWriMo, and November writing goals · 3:34am Nov 3rd, 2013
November is National Novel Writing Month, also known as NaNoWriMo. That's a stupid name, but it's what people call it. The goal is to write a 50,000 word novel during the month of November. That's 1667 words a day. Now, the intention is generally to start something and finish it in November, but if I do that, I'll have two major, unfinished, ongoing projects, which is a terrible idea, so instead, I'm going to see if I can get Smoke to 82,564 words before December 1.
Spoilers: I can't. I'm going to see what I CAN accomplish in that time frame though. Why push myself for the NaNoWriMo (augh) word count goal? Because my biggest weakness as a writer--scratch that, as a person--is output. It's what I need to work on most as a writer, and as a human being. 1,667 words a day is honestly not a lot, so you shouldn't have to worry about me writing garbage for the sake of meeting goals. (Bear in mind though, that I've already announced plans for three cloppy, PC chapters in quick succession. That won't be related to this; it's planned.) I've done 9,000 in a sitting in the past, which WAS a lot, and which left me in considerable physical pain. I won't have to do that unless I write nothing for five solid days.
This won't be easy. It's not a good month for it, honestly--Disgaea D2 came out last month, and it's an incredible devourer of time, another NIS game comes out next week and will likely also eat lots of time, and the PlayStation 4 comes out in two weeks. If I can actually get even 40,000 words done by Dec. 1, someone owes me a goddamned prize. I may need a break after that, and December is a miserable month for me, so if I DO hit the goal, make it last. That might be it for a while.
Oh--and don't worry about Smoke not being an 80,000 word story. The plan has always been three "seasons." We're something like halfway through season one.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who identifies them self as pathologically lazy, though that probably makes it worse for me (excuses, excuses). I've been meaning to pump out a very short fic (I mean extremely short) that I've been working on for much longer than I care to admit.
In regards to Smoke, it's great to hear that there's so much more of that story to go. Even if it takes you forever, I'm going to enjoy every chapter that comes out
A gentle breeze guide your path, a warm smile welcomes you're return.
finally
Oh no, those poor Pokemans!
(so, you've been playing X or Y? you should totally show us your Pokemon when November is over)
Good luck on your self-imposed challenge, I'm sure you'll do well!
I'll be trying something similar, as you know, for some of my own projects that have gone without an update in far too long. I like this national writing month stuff, I've never really done anything for it before but it's kinda exciting!

I've been playing Y a bit, mainly during breaks at work. I'm not very far in. I generally liked Pokemon back when I was 18 and Red/Blue were brand new, and I kept up with it through Yellow, Snap, etc., but ever since then, there's been no real reason to return. Every Pokemon game has been virtually identical to every other, with extremely minor additions to gameplay (berries, etc.), and some usually AWFUL new Pokemon designs. X/Y solves most of those complaints, but many of the new designs are still completely horrible. It's also way too easy; I out level everything without even trying. It's still generally amusing, but no Disgaea.
As for my self-imposed challenge, I'm currently sitting at 2345 words. I target 3,000 and go over/under as the chapter warrants. I think this one will go over a bit before it's ready. Should've been done by now, but I conked out earlier than expected last night.

I know, I know, I'm a bad, bad, author. I come back from hiatus, post a chapter, and then take so long for the next that it's practically another hiatus. With any luck, my goal for the month will keep things moving better, at least for a while.

Cool! I picked up X last weekend, and just like you I'm not that far yet.
I see that you've uploaded a new chapter, awesome! I'll be reading that later tonight, will drop a comment then.

Yep, new chapter. Now to play for a bit, then to start on that fairy tale...
