I didn't read the first version, so I can't say anything about that.
As far as I remember, you especially got the atmosphere right. You had enough descriptions to generate a vivid picture of a snowy Equestria. Also, I actually liked your character, especially because he tends to be rude and a bit selfish. That's what makes him interesting, having them have a conflict is much more interesting to read about than letting them be friends right away. Also, the flashback was a great idea. This gave him a backstory and thus a lot more depth.
As I said, it quickly became one of my most favourite stories, I actually couldn't wait for an update.
