Paul Kelly, Australian Mucisian · 6:03am Oct 17th, 2013
Many Australians will recognise the above name, Paul Kelly, since he is a very prolific songwriter and singer, and has been for a good 30+ years now. Some of you from overseas might have heard of him too, or heard his music. I know I've been hearing his songs for longer than I've known about him being the artist.
As for why I'm posting this; something very interesting happened at my school today. For English, we had a very special incursion from Paul himself, which I have to say is probably the best school thing that I've been able to go to. I adore so many of his songs, especially "From St Kilda to Kings Cross" and "To Her Door". We asked him questions about himself, how and why he writes, and a good deal of other things. It's really interesting that he came along, since he did it completely voluntarily, as in he wasn't getting paid to do so, though we did give him some wine as a gift anyway. But if you've seen the documentary made about him within recent years, you'll probably remember that he legitimately finds it really difficult to talk about himself. And yet he did for a whole hour, which is what I think is interesting about his decision to come. There were some funny responses too, like the fact that he'd taught himself to make coffee using an clothes iron in case of no stove or hotplate.
After the interview, we got no less that three songs performed live! He used an acoustic guitar and a harmonica, but it all sounded really great to me.
Here are the three songs in order of his playing them;
I loved the third song especially. It was quite beautifully played. Overall, I think the entire visit was interesting and a good experience.
So, if you've got any thoughts on this subject, feel free to comment. See you next time!
