Thoughts on Spike's inconsistant maturity · 8:25am Oct 14th, 2013
Ok, there are three aspects to this: What the truth probably is; what would be fun and awesome but will probably not be even close to what the canon will come out with, if it comes out with anything at all; and a realistic view of how this type of personality could come about in the real world.
Fist, what probaly is true: Fact is, Spike is only part of the main cast as a side character like Luna and the CMC. Certainly, he got his own episodes but he's not really someone you can reliably see when things go down beyond being Twilight's underpaid assistant. So, with this in mind, chances are that the writers simply have different headcanons about him. Some see him as Twilight's assistant, a competent cook and scribe while others see him as a little kid prone to doing all the foolish things that the CMC do. That's not to say that he has to be one or the other, but the writers don't seem to have agreed on a middle ground as of yet.
Now, what would be absolutely awesome, but probably not true: Spike is in fact thousands of years old and a personal friend to Celestia. Celestia used her magic to make him appear as a baby dragon and he does his best to act the part because it's crucial to his mission: Make a new Alicorn. However, sometimes his true nature pops out and he shows some uncharacteristic maturity.
And finally: How such a personality could come about in the real world or: how Spike had to give up his childhood to help Twilight Sparkle. This is something that will probably never come up but with the fact that for most of the time Twilight has been an emotional and mental wreck, Spike probably needed to grow up a lot faster than he wanted to in order to take care of her. So that's the sad truth of it. Spike needed to be the adult for Twilight. He needed to be there for her when she couldn't be there for herself.
And those are my thoughts.
