Pony Fantasy 6 review

In my opinion, if their was a game genre I'll like to see Friendship is Magic in, it be RPG. We have 6 characters with different skills, a wide world to explore, and a host of monsters like hydras and Cerberus. So why not. Well there are Pony RPGs in development and most of the goods I've seen are either not finished, cancelled or on hiatus(If anyone can find one thats finished please tell me). But while an original adventure hasn't been made, mods of already made games have been done and there's two mods that have got my interest. Lets start Pony fantasy 6 by John Bowden, a mod of one the greatest games ever.(I've never played it, but I want to.)

Graphics
I'm not the guy who raves about graphics, so I'll be quick. They're okay. It's not that they look bad is that they contrast badly with the realistic setting of FF6. The new enemy sprites aren't much better, but I heard he's getting help with those for the next release. the worst is some guy called Owzer and I have no idea what he is. Altogether, I'm neutral to the sprites.

Story
Now lets get this out of the way. If you think this is an insult to Final Fantasy 6. Don't play it. Nobodies forcing you to. The story is a simple retelling being told with ponies. I personally like stories like this, one of my favorite Rugrats episode's was the story of Passover. While I'll admit some scene may not have the same impact as they are suppose and their are problems with story parts, Applebloom's arc comes to mind, the story was enjoyable. The jokes that were added were funny, some scenes actually made me cry and I can see why Kefka is regarded as one of the greatest villains ever.

Casting
But this is a retelling, It's only as good as the people who play the roles, and for the most part I think the main party and Kefka were well cast. Twilight plays a decent Terra, Celestia and Luna are a fun Edgar and Sabin, Discord is a excellent Kefka, and Fluttershy is a really good contrast for Shadow. So the casting is all good right. WRONG!! Outside of the main characters, the rest of the cast falls badly. Either they got the wrong character for that role or relied on an OC. Mayor Mare and Zecora were the best used, But Gilda and Vinyl were awful.
Gilda is nothing like Gesthal at all. Gesthal from what I heard was a horrible dictator who lied, robbed and murder to get more power. Gilda was just a bully. I may hate her but Chrysalis would've been better. And does Vinyl have any connection to Applebloom. No. If any thing Twist should've been one Bloom wants to save. they are friends.
And Ditzy, or Derpy depending on how you want to call her. My god was she forced. I know shes optional and fun to use, but come on could you at written her better instead of making me cringe when I read her dialogue.
I think the main problem was that it was made too soon.
Gameplay
Now the big question. Is it a fun game? And the answer to that is:
IT'S FREAKIN AWESOME!!!
Each character has a different set of moves depending on what race. Unicorns can use magic, Pegasus can use jump, Earth ponies do whatever. I like because it gives each character a use in battle so can get more attached to said character. Also the difficult has been spiked up a notch. Anyone ever thought Kefka was an easy final boss. This ones a different story. plus some bugs that didn't work or can be exploited have been fixed like blind working or the vanish-death trick is removed.

My thoughts
While not best adapted, and mainly casted, I thought it was a fun little mod. It made want to find the Advanced version.

Now if your a brony and like Final Fantasy, then give it a try. If you think it's an insult to gaming everywhere, just ignore it.
