What is with the obsession this community has with all the shipping ?????? · 1:32am Apr 9th, 2012
Okay. I know I'm going to catch heat for this, but what the hell is it with all the shipping going on in the fanfic community !?! I mean, I don't mind reading a fic with shipping in it occasionally if it's done well, but lately, it seems that almost EVERYTHING being produced out there is being done with this obsession of slapping our beloved characters into lesbian couples. As I said, I have nothing against this once in a while if the story is properly done but enough is enough. It's getting to the point of being complete fan service now. If I see one more Rainbow Dash/Applejack pairing, I'm going to scream. Yeah. We get it. She has a rainbow colored mane so she's obviously gay. Applejack is butch because she's a hard working farmer. Lyra and Bon Bon are always seen together so they're OBVIOUSLY a gay couple. It's almost like people are watching the show trying to see same sex relations in EVERYTHING and fanficing it.
It's getting to the point where it's SO overdone. I'm so tired of reading a story that I will think is fantastic only to have it end by the author slamming two of the Mane6 together. You see. I don't see ANY kind of sexual relationships between any of the characters in the show. I just don't see it and I'm bored by all the fanfics that shoehorn it in there all the time.
Maybe FIMFIC needs an extra check/x box in it's archive search for "Shipping" because I'm bored of it. It's getting to the point where it's annoying me, and I'm having a REALLY tough time trying to find fanfics without some kind of lesbian shipping in it.
Please don't consider this an anti-gay rant because that's not what I intended and I don't mean to offend anyone.

This so much. I don't understand why there has to be some kind of shipping in nearly every story; it's fine that there ARE shipping stories, I can ignore them, but I'm tired of seeing it almost everywhere.
Another thing that I think is a problem is random insertion of relationships or sex where they add exactly zero to the story. The Return of Nightmare Moon felt the need to inform us that Twilight had lost her virginity in school. Can I ask WHY? Why is that even relevant?
Even OCs aren't spared this. The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress informs us that Nightlight's (the protagonist) sister is apparently a paramour of Berry Punch. Not only don't I remember this being evident in the scenes featuring them so far, I also don't understand 1) why they can't just be implicit friends - why do they have to be lesbian lovers?, or 2) how it's in any way relevant to the story.
I'm not some anti-this that or the other person either - I've dropped any desire to debate or convert on this site; I'm here just to have fun and help others have fun - I just can't read a story without feeling like there's going to be some random sex detail I feel uncomfortable reading. If I've come this far and liked the story, the last thing I want is some pornographic detail that seems forced and out of place. It's like there's this unspoken rule that you can't write a story involving two characters without invoking their ship. I'm not reading Only Human because it's tagged Romance and apparently has Bon-bon in it; yeah, I'm pretty sure it's got LyraBon in it. Not like it HAS to, it just does.
The reason I hate the movie Step Brothers has to do with the character of Alice and her public restroom sex scene with Dale. It's exactly as it sounds. It's disgusting and adds nothing to the plot of the movie. Oh, and it's not funny either.
Seriously. It seems that 99% of fan fiction writers seem to think that the entire population of Equestria are lesbian for each other and feel the need to tell us all about it regardless of what the actual story they're telling is. Mare/Stallion relationships are NOT the norm in hardly any of the fanfiction and when they are, no one really talks about it in the writing or needs to tell us all about it like all the lesbian ships.
And I have trouble even bringing this up in conversations because so many people have this overly sensitive knee jerk reaction and assume that I'm being anti-gay and they don't listen to what I'm ACTUALLY trying to say. This isn't an anti-gay thing. I have no problem with shipping of any kind as long as it furthers the story and doesn't take me out of it. My problem is that there is TOO MUCH shipping to the point of almost every story I read, the author has the need to talk about as many lesbian relationships or feelings that they can shove in there. I would expect equal representation of straight relationships as well as I get so tired of constant lesbian ships especially when it doesn't add to the story at all.
Maybe I'm just having a hard time articulating what I'm saying in the correct way. This is NOT a rant against lesbian relationships in fiction. This is a rant of there being too much of it and not the other way around.
Take for example, music. This is a HUGE problem that I have with the music industry. It also seems that 80 to 90 percent of songs that are written are songs about "love/romantic relationships" with very few other subjects being written about. Songs about other, more interesting subjects are VERY RARE and hard to find and you have to REALLY shovel through a LOT of the "same old" to find something that's even a little different or new. Lesbian shipping seems to the the fanfictions "pop music" and it's getting to be REALLY old and tedious to me.
Just once or twice, I would LOVE to see a fanfic, or comic, or anything, where Lyra and Bon Bon aren't or Vinyl Scratch and Octavia aren't lovers. It seems that EVERYONE in the fandom just assumes that they're lovers and not friends.
