The price of wings chapter 01 · 1:52am Jul 22nd, 2013
I know some people were hoping for Twain chapter 2 (it's coming, I'm working on it now) but TPoW was already open and I was still working on it and the more that I worked on it the more and more I wanted to finish it. You guys have no idea how much this chapter changed. Originally I wanted the "reports" to imitate Twilight's letters to Celestia and I was going to slowly reveal that it wasn't her, revealing the true writer gradually. Several steps and a few evolutions later and I finally came to the phase where I had to include the "from/to/forward" parts of the reports and I knew that the pretense of an illusion would be impossible. At that point I stopped trying to hide it and began changing things further.
It was so difficult, trying to think of the things that a simple human would notice that the natives would not, I kept going back and changing things. I also kept trying to make things simpler to understand. There's a way I talk and think and then there's a good presentation. If you guys actually met me you'd find me studdering, not from nervousness nor through inability to speak but because I think and feel more than I talk so finding the words can be difficult even when I've found the idea. That actually helps with writing because it's slow enough I can usually find the word when I need to.
A warning, I give a part of myself to most/all of my main characters and many of my side characters (minor characters are usually just there for plot purposes) and this is especially true for interdimensional characters. I feel good about Cobalt becuase, as a character, he's been evolving well beyond that. I still ask myself "what would it be like for me?" but I also ask Cobalt what he would do and what he would like. When the differences between my own designs for a character and what that character starts developing on their own start becoming apparent to this level I feel like the character is more "mature" so to speak.
It will, unfortunately, be some time before I can make chapter 2 becuase I'm still working on chapter two for Twain. The good news though is that Twain is so short that the chapters will be both few and short (relatively speaking, eesh, 11,000+ words for a first chapter?!) so Twain will be over soon. But I also have a take-home final I need to do research for that is due next monday (29th, not 22nd) so I've got some reading and writing to do this week so both chapters will take some time.
Something to look forward to, Chapter 2 (TPoW) will introduce a few side characters and give some sense to the dangers of this venture, and we will begin to see why I titled the story the way I did.
