1) Nightmare Moon had great potential that was dumped.
2) Sunset shimmer was the only pony with guts to go against the system and her potential was dumped.
3) Discord had great potential as ultimate Big Bad that was dumped
4) Equestria is tyranny with good publicity.
5) Changelings have great potential as everyday performers and probably two-thirds of performers are changelings
6) Diamond Dogs, Griffins and Minotaurs have great potential for industry.

Fic idea 1
Sane Nightmare Moon. After return Nightmare Moon does not act directly. Instead she gathers info, using her impersonating and stealth skills. Afterward she starts business and using her abilities for espionage grows it into little empire and separate country. Two counties: industrial and pragmatic (Nightmare Moon) and idealistic and rural (Equestria) fights for influence in the world. Result is expectable, with Equestria falling under control of new predator.
Fic idea 2+4
2+4. Sunset shimmer emigrates and founds new settlement somewhere across the sea. She is not alone, a constant income of emigrants Equestria is glad to spare is going there. However, there is no royalty there, so new society develops just fine and becomes a threat to old Equestria, because it has undeniably better life for commoners. A war starts with Shimmer sacrificing herself in process. She later returns as an alicorn, a princess of freedom and respect. However as princess of freedom she hides herself split into three commoners and guard and strengthen her subjects from shadows.
Fic idea 3
Discord never was defeated or imprisoned. He actually never existed. This is not seen, but during several episodes an ancient conspiracy of His followers is found and exterminated. After several centuries Celestia charges her student Twilight Sparkle with creation of similar conspiracy, because without it the world stagnates.
Fic idea 5
Trixie is a changeling. After being defeated she finds herself challenged and start to improve her abilities like crazy. Being changeling, she quickly becomes the world-famous showmare (under different pseudonym), gaining enough love to ignore the passage of time. Many years ago she returns to Twilight and ask, who would be remembered: the dying alicorn or the famous artist, and who have seen more love and friends.

Classical Tech vs Magic war.
When I was plotting out ideas for a novel a few years back, this was something I considered heavily. Basically, it involved a planet where one half of the population pursued science and the other half magic; they were mostly peaceful, but then, a war broke out. It was kind of interesting to me because of the notion that sufficiently-advanced science could replicate everything magic does.
Also, the idea that science and magic are two different reality tunnels or ways of categorising the physical world, just with different terminology attached.
