Question: Have any of you ever read any of the books from the series "His Dark Materials" by Philip Pullman?
If the awnser is yes, then hooray! You'll know what I'm talking about! If it's no, here's a link to a brief(ish) summary of the three books that make up the series.
As you may or may not know, I have very recently been working, setting up and generally preparing for "going live" with Battlefield:Equestria's new website.
Here's a little spoiler for my next story, which was inspired by this image.
I think I was human once.
That's what the memories say. These memories were mine, I think. Little more than emotions now, faded by time. A thousand fractured images swirl in what I assume is my mind. Faces, places, people and things.
That's what my point is. Democracy is all well and good, but when it's used in regards to this website, it clearly isn't the best way to go about things. The whole point of the feature box should be to promote stories that deserve the attention, not to advertise trollfics that are only up there because they're trollfics; stories that have no artistic merit, but attract attention simply because they enrage people.
And seriously, does anyone even know how the Feature Box works? I certianly don't, and I'm sure most other users don't either.
1208206 I remember hearing somewhere that it operated on an algorithm . . something like x likes/favs/views in y time gets a story featured.
I was agreeing with you, by the way. Not sure if that came across properly.
But on a user-driven site like this, it's going to be nearly impossible to design a system that takes into account both quality of individual work, and the popular opinions of the masses. I certainly can't think of any way to improve the current system while maintaining 'user-driven' functionality.
It's sad that at the moment, the 'trending' FotM here is essentially porn, but it's also somewhat indicative of the demographic. We aren't all forty-something faux-English-gentlemen, reclining in libraries with Lagavulin and Neitzsche.
What I really want is a separate filter for the 'Sex' and 'Gore' tags. Disabling mature is all well and good, but there are plenty of stories worth reading with gore. It's not a one-size-fits-all sort of deal.
The feature box is a democracy, not a meritocracy.

I used to be a whiny user like you too...
But then I got featured!
Suck it, faggots!

You make me sad. Now excuse me, I have to get back to procrastinating.

But seriously, I don't write stories anyway. I'm too busy managing BF: E or otherwise procrastinating.
