Equestria Girls Review · 5:17am Jun 27th, 2013
So, I just saw Equestria Girls, and figured that I should share what I thought about it. Simple as that, really.
The plot involved Twilight Sparkle's crown, which doubles as stylish accessory and outlet for the Elements of Harmony, being stolen by a former student of Princess Celestia known as Sunset Shimmer. Shimmer has been hiding out in a seperate dimension for years-one run by a strange, non-magical species known as humans. Twilight has to chase after her and get the crown back before the gate between worlds closes and leaves her trapped. Overall, I actually quite enjoyed the plot. There was a decent number of subarcs and returning background characters that gave a pretty good illusion of a continuous world. One small arc in particular had better have some form of an effect on the show, or else the writers are insane for missing the opportunity. Admittedly, there were a few plotholes, but they were fairly neglegible.
Being in an alternate universe, there are human versions of nearly everypony in the show. Their personalities remained the same, which is to be expected, but I was expecting a new slew of characters instead of the same ones as before in different forms. The new villain, Sunset Shimmer, was rather one-dimensional as well, but that one dimension did fit her role well. Still points off for it though.
Due to the lack of magic and flight, there was a much smaller amount of slapstick humor, but they didn't abandon it entirely. What was missed has been replaced with some admittedly funny verbal humor dealing with the alternate universe premise.
The writing was similar to what can be found in the show; that is to say, pretty good but occasionally cringeworthy due to the intention of catering to little girls. The songs in particular were extremely grating.
The animation was fantastic, as per usual for MLP. The effects, while rare due to the lack of pony abilities, were done extremely well. The characters were animated so effectively that it actually took a few seconds for me to get reaquainted with the pony versions of them.
Completely wierd thing; the princesses' real-word counterparts just sounded kinda... off. I don't know.
Another really strange thing that probably nobody else noticed; there was a downright ridiculous number of times when the camera could have shifted ten degrees and had a clear upskirt shot. This, couple with the short skirts and the fact that every female character had breasts(although the size was toned down from real life somewhat), did make me feel somewhat uncomfortable watching it. Like I said, I was probably the only person to think that at all due to the fact that I am a complete pervert.
Overall, I actually enjoyed Equestria Girls. It actually does feel like a part of the show and its canon. It's far from perfect; upskirt shots, small plotholes, and oh-god-those-songs were all issues, but the plot, verbal humor, and animation effects do make this film worth watching if you enjoy the show in my opinion.
There. You may now fill the post with hate comments that preemptively judge my sexual preference because I liked the movie.
Well you pretty much summed it up and I agree wholeheartedly with everything Uve said. The songs were hard to handle lol as well as the bad human dancing to the songs....as well as...oh dear lord....what did they do to principal celestia and vice principal Luna? U weren't kidding when u said their voices didn't seem to go with their human counterparts...also I wonder how they managed to make the two most majestic looking ponies on the show frumpy and unattractive.....celestia sounded bored or irritated when she talked and her eyes were off......I was really disappointed in that ....otherwise I liked the movie....I laughed like an idiot when the great and powerful Trixie needed some peanut butter crackers :)
1171519 Ha ha, that was the exact scene that sprang to my mind when writing about the alternate universe humor.
