So, Double Rainboom · 11:32pm Mar 31st, 2013
So the long awaited fan-made episode was released yesterday. The animation was pretty good, but that was too be expected after all that time and work that went into it, but it was nowhere near the 100% show accurate quality they claimed before. Voice acting was good or at least nothing that registered as bad with me. The music was pretty good, I especially like the opening. The pacing was off in some places, long shots at dust clouds and faces that could have been shorter.
Which brings me to my major gripe: The writing.
It was pretty bad. The story wasn't really a coherent story, it ended with an almost deus ex machina (at least they hinted at it a little before the end) and the lesson at the ended was simply contrived. And don't get me started on the overuse of memes and shoutouts. This was announced as an episode true to the spirit of the show. But it turned out to be a fanficy crossover parody of MLP. At least in my opinion.
I think it is pretty easy to spot why it turned out that way. Just look at the credits. Tons of animators, artists, musciancs etc. contributed to this project. And just one writer. Why? Why because writing is easy. Or at least people seem to think so, after all you need is a keybord.
So, I guess Double Rainboom actually does have a real lesson: Just like acting, animating or making music, writing is a craft, too. And just like anything else it needs practice, talent and input.
