The Top 3 Reasons Why "Double Rainboom" Doesn't Work · 2:26am Mar 31st, 2013
Spoilers below!!!!!
Just finished watching Double Rainboom. What did I think of it?
Yeah, I didn't like it very much. Why? I'll explain:
#3: The Characters
The characters (in my opinion) are so out of character that it's unbelievable. Rainbow Dash goes from being a blubbering idiot to some sensitive superhero. What? Twilight acts WAY too involved in science (Now THAT'S an accomplishment.) The....(sighs)....Powerpuff Girls.....act unbelievably out of character. Why would they be so hell-bent in capturing RD?
#2: The Plot
What is the plot anyways? It's about Twilight making a potion that can increase the talent of other ponies. When RD drinks it, it somehow makes her do a double rainboom, and ends up dimension-leaping....into Cartoon Network land. You have to fuck up pretty bad if you make that NOT interesting, and sadly, that's exactly what they do here. First off, why would RD be bothering Twilight in the first place? It's never mentioned. Why is Twilight making the potion in the first place? Never mentioned. Why is she so upset when her potion gets drunken, yet is able to make another one real quickly? Never mentioned. And if it took her since MAGIC KINDERGARTEN to make it, why DID it take so quick to brew up another one??? NEVER FUCKING EXPLAINED! And why would the potion make RD travel to a different dimension?????? NEVER EXPLAI- Notice a pattern here?
#1: The Animation
I knew from the very first teaser trailer that their claim, "100% Show Accurate Animation" was a goddamn lie. Now, don't get me wrong: The animations good.....to an extent..... I remember Zachary explaining that whenever you animate ponies, you don't want the audience to automatically think of puppets. Well, his animators failed him. The way the characters and environment move, it automatically makes me think of Flash puppets. Every facial expression made by the characters was used in the show, so when they use them, it just looks awkward. And it's used WAY too fucking much. Zachary and his animators are way too involved in their claim, "Every body part should move," that they make sure EVERY single fucking body part moves in any frame. And that's exactly how NOT to animate MLP:FIM. It's okay if a few body parts are moving at a time, but not every little piece of the puppet needs to move at the EXACT SAME TIME!
If you happen to like it, go ahead, no ones stopping you. But for me, this just didn't work. I tried to like it, believe me, but in the end, it just comes out as an overhyped mess, just like Slender: The Arrival.
Well... I certainly do appreciate it for what it is.
I'll be honest, the characterization was way off. The two most awkward things in the characterization from my opinion was how Twilight was depicted as constant grump during the whole thing and Pinkie Pie. The way I see it, Twilight didn't seem to be acting as much a friend as she was acting well... I can't seem to come up with better wording right now... But she was being extremely over-professional, never talking to Rainbow as a friend where she should have known that her book-smart persona wouldn't be able to properly connect with Dash.
My other problem is Pinkie, there is just something so wrong here... Ponyville was absolutely annihilated and all Pinkie could do was smile. Seriously?
Then there is plot.... It was pretty much just a random series events that someone attempted to glue together with sand. Most of the story was some kind of fan-service, fulfilling a bunch of cliches you see all over the fandom. Examples:
A) Double Rainboom.
B) Dimension hopping.
C) Human's wanting to ride a pony (Note that there are multiple ways to "ride")
D) Pinkie Pie being some kind of crazy god.
I'm sure there is more that I can't think of at the moment.
And then the moral... Well... The moral itself is good, but the execution of it is a complete and utter mess. I saw it in the top comments, I'll restate it here, because it was obvious.... Rainbow Dash got off waaaaaaaayyyy too easy. SHE DESTROYED THE TOWN! And all she gets is a reprimand....
And I'm also wondering if I'm the only one kind of erked by that Derpy Hooves part.
Like... I don't even have an eye disability like that and I can already tell that the joke
was rather insulting.
I personally liked Snowdrop better. It gave me the feels.

To me the biggest problem was the characters? No. The Plot? No. The animation? Hey that was good. The poorly executed moral? No. It was the complete lack of conflict that spawned ALL of the other problems with it. Think about it. How many episodes of the show have no conflict? ALL of the have conflict, even the bad ones. Oh and because of this it seems to continuously shove referential humor down our throats essentially saying "LAUGH AT IT! LAUGH AT IT!" If this were an actual episode, this would probably be the worst one.
