Approved Shippings + Chapters 5 and 6 · 9:14pm Feb 27th, 2013
In my time on this website and indeed in my time as a brony, I have come across all manner of shippings (many of which cause me to want to find and hit a reset button on my memory), some work, but many to me just don't.
I've always figured in the official canon of the show that if any sort of shippings were to occur, it would have to both make sense for the show itself as well as keep and maintain the status quo (or hopefully break it if Hasbro decides to be ballsy), but in either case it still has to make sense.
I had some free time last night so I threw this little chart together with that in mind. These are some shippings that I believe would make sense and would actually work in the canon of the show. Keep in mind that these are still my opinion but yeah, really think about them. These would work and they do make sense. Also check my description below for why I think they would work.
Twilight and OC: With all the characters that have appeared that are colts, I really don't think any of them are a match of Twilight. If she's to fall in love with someone, they'll have to invent a new character specifically for her. Who this character would be I can't say since I don't work for Hasbro (and no I am not suggesting that Twilight hooks up with my OC) but it would be the best way to go about this. Besides, making an episode in which Twilight falls in love would be a good episode to see. It would be an entirely new type of friendship she's never experienced before and it will be interesting to see her go to all of her friends for advice and hear all their differing opinions about love (with Rarity's being the most entertaining). But yeah in short, if Twilight is to fall in love in the canon of the show, they'll have to invent a new character just for her. Also I know a lot of you love to pair her up with the Doctor but sorry. To me the Doctor belongs to Derpy and always will.
Applejack and Soarin: I honestly have no idea why this ship works. It just does. They seem like they would make a cute couple. Think about it for a moment and you'll see what I mean. It would also be an interesting episode to see where they meet and fall in love, and Dash gets jealous cause she likes him (albeit just because he is a Wonderbolt) and she and Applejack keep fighting each other over him. Since they already have a fierce rivalry between each other this would only escalate it, and there would be a good lesson to learn in all of this. Plus, having Dash hook up with Soarin would be way to cliche.
Rainbow Dash and A Royal Guard: Going off of that, if Dash is to fall in love (they will never recognize her as a lesbian so don't say anything about that) then it will have to be someone who not only meets her unreasonably 'cool' standards, but won't get in the way of her achieving her goal of becoming a Wonderbolt. A royal guard member would have both of these qualifications. Plus I've always kind of wanted to see a royal guard member with a bit more personality than the others. One that stands out is what I am saying.
Rarity is forever alone: Okay simply put, Rarity has a lot of problems with her standards and personality. If she doesn't fix these, then she'll never find anyone. Its just how it is. Plus that will also be an interesting episode to see. Also before any of you mention Spike, just stop. We both know that that will never work, so yeah. Just don't.
Pinkie Pie and Braeburn: THESE TWO ARE MADE FOR EACH OTHER!!! Plain and Celestia damned simple. She's bats*** insane, so is he. She likes throwing parties, he likes to go nuts. She likes to greet new people coming into town, he likes to run up and shout "WELCOME TO APPALOOSA!!!" IT ALL MAKES SENSE. Plus, we haven't seen Little Strongheart since her appearance in the episode she was in and since he wasn't with her in the reunion episode, its safe to assume that he is fair game.
Fluttershy and Big Macintosh: I believe I do not even need to make an argument for this one. They are made for each other, just like Pinkie and Braeburn. Plain and simple.
BUT WAIT!
I hear you calling out. Aren't all of these ships from Beating the Heat by Andrew Joshua Talon? Is that where you got all of these ideas? Especially since it is on your top favorites list?
Well to answer your question. Yes. Most of these do appear in Beating the Heat (which I really recommend you read if you haven't already). However, while most of these ships do appear in there, that's not where I got these ideas. I've had em for a while and to see most of them appear in that one was kind of a coincidence.

For me most of the time I like shipping only as long as one of them is an OC, because you can pair any two canon characters together, but you can easily argue if they don't have any chemistry. With an OC you can make them have it by giving them things in common, or exploring somethings with the canon characters as long as they're not too OOC.
Example- My own story Spawn of Disharmony- Now some can say that Rainbow my not go for a guy like Seth, who tries to embarrass her by saying how cute she is all the time, and what not, but for me I can see that since in my story I've shown that Rainbow has a bit of a sensitive side that she normal only shows to Seth, and this is why she fell for him. Even if not really shown in my story I have the idea that Rainbow was repeatedly picked on by those three jackasses Dumbbell, Hoops, and Score, and with the idea of how people think RD is a lesbian just because of her personality and rainbow mane, I imagine them saying stuff like that to her as well. So she was turned off by ponies who act like that. Now when she met Seth she saw that he was a nice guy, unlike those she grew up with, and with the what happened with the Mare Do Well incident, seeing that he cared about her, she got an attraction to him.
Tell me if that makes any sense.
Grah... I ain't all that knowledgable when it comes to shipping... Pony to pony? I am braindead in that but Human to pony? Slight chance I can manage there.

I kind of approached this as if they were going to start messing with shipping in the official cannon which is best.
Why is it that my only complaint is that they're all straight ships?
