Tirek and Grogar and my Historical Headcanon. · 11:46pm Feb 23rd, 2013
So to help decide if I wanted to include Tirek and Grogar in my headcanon history for Equestria, I finally sat down and watched Midnight Castle and Return to Tambelon and if you follow those links, you can get my impressions of both. I'll talk about the individual villains in a bit, but first I wanted to get into the series itself.
Anyone who thinks G1 can stand up to G4 is suffering from severe nostalgia. The only ways in which G1 can even remotely compete with G4 is in terms of the art style making the ponies look more like real ponies, and that the villains get to be far more villainous, but neither one of those points are necessarily a good thing. G4's artstyle allows for much more expressive characters, much more dynamic action, and much sillier/cartoony events to take place without feeling out of place, and even though every single character is built on just about the same model, G4 STILL manages to make each of the characters feel far more unique from each other.
That said, it really wasn't much worse than any other cartoon from the 80s.
As for the point on the villains, that bridges me right into assessing the two of them. Tirek and Grogar were both such cliche "bad guys" that I honestly have trouble taking them seriously on their own. Grogar was hit particularly hard on this point, seeing as how all he was ever able to do was capture a couple ponies, of which most was due to their own ineptitude, whereas Tirek actually changed 4 of them into dragons. I'm rather glad that I never watched these episodes until after I had seen the characters as interpreted by DiscorderlyConduct or I may have never considered them worth including at all. In some ways, the two of them are most interesting when you compare them to G4 Nightmare Moon and Sombra, where Tirek was attempting to bring Eternal Night, and Grogar was connected to a City that had disappeared for centuries, which makes both of them actually fit in quite well to the headcanon I have already written out. The biggest issue I'm left with is that neither one actually would be directly affecting any of my stories, even when it came to flashbacks by Celestia/Luna/Discord/Chrysalis/Cadance, so trying to create a detailed backstory for them is generally unnecessary.
However humans just cannot exist in my headcanon. Especially not after seeing how horribly useless Megan and the others were.
