What do you do... · 6:00pm Feb 11th, 2013
...when you realize you've Followed somebody who espouses views that really offend you?
For instance, I used to follow a certain writer (loosely) until they made a pretty homophobic comment on their blog. Today, I ran into a similar issue.
I immediately Unfollow them and try to move on. Today, I Unfollowed them, posted an irritable remark, then realized I was being stupid and deleted it.
So, in general, I just ditch 'em and stop thinking about them. Clearly, I'm breaking that rule today. What do you do, if there's anybody reading this? Do you just try to keep reading their stories and avoid reading their blog posts?
The world isn't filled with people who think the same way. Why surround yourself with people who think similar?
817317 I don't mean un-Following someone because they're a Democrat and you're a Republican. I mean them discussing views that really offend you--like talking about how Jesus was probably a conman, how the Holocaust didn't really happen, or, yeah, just general bigotry. I don't really want to have to see that on FiM Fiction.
If someone says or does things that go against me and my beliefs through direct insult and mocking, or makes a point of disagreeing with me, I will typically ignore them. If we simply disagree but can get past it, I keep in touch.
I know what you mean, I follow a couple of people here on FIMFic that have views that I really don't agree with. One of them is less annoying, he just has an incredibly cynical outlook that I dislike, but the other is an outspoken atheist, and he can be offensive about it (and proud of being offensive about it).
I've thought about unfollowing them in the past, but I don't know, I guess the way I see it, if I'm strong enough in my beliefs to ignore it when they post something that offends me, I can put up with it. Part of having beliefs is being able to defend them, and being able to endure criticism over them.
I also had reasons for following them, and up until now, by letting what the bad things they say roll off of me, the good things about them aren't necessarily diminished, they are still there, just less apparent.
Do whatever you think is right though, I know at some point unfollowing either of these guys might be the best decision for me, but you may already have reached that point.
818590>>818363 Thanks for your comments, guys. They've given me reason to think.
Honestly, if I'd really liked their stories, I probably wouldn't have un-Followed them. I mostly just ditched 'em because I didn't want to give them support. So it was a spite thing. If it had been, say, [writer I like] saying [something really offensive] (I was going to give actual names and stuff, then thought better of it ), I might have just tried to ignore it.
As-is, they weren't very good writers, so there wasn't much hesitation.
818868 Good to know.
However, my next story (under the title of The Scootaloo Throwing Championship) is going to be the most horribly offensive, graphic, violent and anti-Scootaloo story ever written. I'm writing it to trump Cupcakes and also as a present for my cousin.
So ignore it if it'll cost me your favoritism.
819237 Eh, I don't think I'll be offended. I may not read it, but there's a difference in my mind between "things that offend me" and "things that disturb me".
819431 Oh, good! In that case, who do you think should compete in the Scootaloo Throwing Championship? I've already got Mayor Mare and Prince Blueblood as the hoses, and Iron Will, the Flimflam Brothers, the Apple Family, Screw Loose and Tony the Brony (character who will appear in a later story of mine) competing, any ideas?
(thread derailed )
819465 I think you should have Berry Punch. But that's just because she's best pony.
