And this is why I'll probably never read it. The only things I ever hear about it (besides gushing praise over how well it's written) is that it's a long and involved slog to get though and that the end is incredibly depressing.
The concept is interesting, but an interesting concept is t enough to justify sometuing that'll take forever to finish and make me feel like crap when I do.
I'm only on chapter four, but I already can tell it's gonna have a downer ending.

I wouldn't consider it a downer ending. It wasn't some fairytale ending were everyone is fine and they all have a big party with cake and hookers, but it was better then you could expect from the situation. I don't want to spoil it for you, but I will tell you that Lyra never gives up.
