    Winding Down <personal blog>

Hey everypony! It's been a really long time, huh? First off, I want to apologize for that. School has been obliterating any free time I've had to write and I got wrapped up in some other big stuff too. Thankfully, after the next few, hellishly difficult weeks leading up to finals, I'll be on break! Finally, time to play some Soul Sacrifice! Here's a little personal blog in case anypony's curious.

    Dear Princess Luna,

I know you're still having a hard time with friendships, so I thought I'd send you letters on what I've learned. Maybe I learn a lot, maybe a little, but learning is always a good thing. Besides, what could be better than sharing with a friend? Maybe you can take what I learned and use it to make even more friends!

The season finale...[SPOILERS][Wall warning] · 4:31am Jan 30th, 2013

...since everypony else is blowing up about it. I just want to say that while I am a little upset at the decision to make Twilight an alicorn, I think it's a better idea to just sit and wait until we can actually watch the episode before we jump to any crazy conclusions. Imo, the episodes of season three have been pretty hit or miss, but we need to remember one thing: M.A. Larson is writing it. He has done some of the best episodes in the show, so I'm sure we can at least put that much faith in him.

Another thing that I'm really considering is the possibility that this is not a permanent change. Let's take another look at the episode synopsis.
"Twilight accidentally casts a spell that switches the Cutie Marks and destinies of all her friends. The only way she can reverse the spell is by writing her own magic."

Just from this we can assume several things.
1. Twilight will learn some new, more powerful magic.
2. The destinies of everypony will be switched.
3. She will have to REVERSE the spell

How about Megan's interview on EW?
“She was set up from the very beginning to be on an important journey,” explains MLP head writer Meghan McCarthy. “It’s really about her earning this new status by combining all the things that we’ve seen her learn over the course of the series.”

But don’t worry, Pony fans — though Twilight will undergo a physical transformation, her personality will remain the same. “What we didn’t want to do was change who she is as a character, because she’s certainly someone that everyone’s proud to know and love,” McCarthy says. “I don’t think becoming a princess really changes her; I think it’s going to introduce some new challenges for her.”

Those challenges will include living up to that lofty new title. In MLP‘s Equestria, “princess” is a designation that’s earned, not freely given — and though princesses have specific leadership roles in pony society, being one really means “being a good pony who shares the gifts that they have been given with others,” according to McCarthy. “We’re building a very unique mythology around being a princess,” she continues. “Every little girl wants to be a princess, and not everybody can get to be a princess — but you can live up to the ideals that should come along with being a princess.”

What I drew from this:
1. Twilight's personality will remain unchanged.
2. This episode allegedly more about upholding noble ideals, using what you learned, and helping others with your gift than becoming all-powerful
3. Megan talks several times about "status" and 'titles', but never states that Twilight will permanently become an alicorn.

Now my theory is the story goes as such:
Twilight casts a spell that switches everypony's lives, putting her in the throne of Canterlot instead of Celestia. Because of the switch, the nature of everypony's being is also switched, causing her to be an alicorn. She spends the day learning what it's like to be in the horseshoes of her beloved teacher, having to help everypony and apply everything she's learned, all the while trying to find out how to fix the spell. The work of being a princess and talking on so many requests quickly becomes too much for her to bear, despite trying her hardest. She eventually reverses the spell, putting everything back into correct order, including herself as a unicorn. She then confronts Celestia and Luna with a new appreciation for the all hard work they do in order to maintain order in Equestria. They may even make her an actual princess, due to her recognition and understanding of all the trials and tribulations that befalls them or for learning new magic regarding Harmony that would be required to maintain balance in Equestria, but she would not stay an alicorn permanently. She won't just magically become a princess.

This is a MY theory based off what I can deduce from the little information we have. I find it fairly viable, but feel free to poke holes in it and let me know. Until then, let's keep the tables unflipped.

"So why the whole big alicorn shitstorm Mist?"
It's simple anonpony: Marketing. It's been said countless times that this could be all chalked up to a marketing ploy to push new toys. Having Twilight have a new form, even just for the episode, is reason enough to make a special edition toy of sorts. The idea is similar to the butterfly winged toys which I'm assuming are based of Rarity's winged form. This way they could market new product and maintain the shows integrity. The mane 6 must change in some way physically for merchandise to continue to push, even if that means random wings or a set of Elements of Harmony armor.

The other thing they could do was push background ponies into the foreground, and I really hope they do not do that, because one thing we all love about BGPs is that their blank slates allow us wonder about their personalities and create our own for them. This is what has made the fandom so strong. It's almost like having cannon OCs. We'd hate to see them change in any way different from the personas that already exist within the fandom. Not only that, but it would draw away from the mane 6 and possibly confuse the younger (read: intended) viewers. New BGPs or races are completely up for grabs though.

IMO, if they need to do more marketing, they are missing so much potential. Show accurate toys are always in high demand and FUNKO is the only one on that. Blindbag playsets would be a fantastic idea and could include various show locations. Elements of Harmony dress-up jewelry is something else I believe every little girl who watches the show would want. Accessory packs for toys used to be huge and I'm sure plenty of ponies would buy gala dresses or new costume for their favorite toy. They've hardly tapped the "school supply" market, which is huge for this kind of thing. I'm sure there a ton of ideas out there and Hasbro is simply just limiting themselves far too much.

My Want List (all with show accurate mane & in no particular order)
1. Rarity as Princess Platinum or "Art of the Dress" version (Tussled Mane w/ Glasses and Measuring Tape Accessories)
2. Twilight Sparkle as Star Swirl the Bearded w/ Detachable Hat/Beard (Real Jingling Bells!)
3. Rainbow Dash in Wonderbolt Academy Uniform w/ Leader Pin and Detachable Goggles
4. Applejack w/ Detachable Hat (is that so much to ask?!)
5. Pinkie Pie as Crystal Empire Spy w/ Detachable Spy Goggles
6. Fluttershy in Sneaking Suit (as seen in the episode: "Magic Duel")
