Why I (so far) hate the new Devil May Cry · 12:51pm Jan 9th, 2013
Seriously. I tried. I really tried. Somewhere deep down inside, I think I still might be trying to see the light side of the new DMC. But I so far hate the new Dante.
I know what you're thinking (if you even know what I'm talking about), and no, it's not just for his new angst filled, pre-teen, baby face, emo looks that makes him seem like he was stylized towards "what kids find cool these days" rather than trying to redefine what cool is; like something that's "cool" would actually go for. But it sort of leads into the next topic.
The old Dante was mostly cool in the way that he was like an entertaining cross between Duke Nukem and Fonzie. Simply over the top in everything he did and spat out cheesy one liners while he did it. It made him fun, which in return, did make him look cool in it's own way. All the hammy acting and story twists old DMC had usually added to the fun, especially in serious moments. Don't get me wrong. It wasn't a perfect gem. Old DMC has a history questionable flaws.
The most I've seen so far of New DMC doesn't impress me much. It looks to have gotten rid of "fun and hokey" for "take me serious guyz" which doesn't work well with it's poor and lifeless voice acting. It even goes as far as to get ride of the combo style meter and even the taunt button to steal a nice chunk of the life out of it's combat system. So no longer will I be air guitaring while enemies explode around me. How fun.
As far as I can see with New Dante, his attempt at "cool" seems to mostly be just yelling obscenities at the bosses. How thrilling.
I might also be a wee bit upset if the new DMC is only going to have the three melee weapons and dual pistols.
Oh, almost forgot to mention the director of the new DMC, Tameem Antoniades, was asked
“So, how do you feel about the fan reaction to DMC?”
And his immediate response was, and I kid you not...
“I don't care.”
Really? Are you kidding me? There's no "we hope they warm up to our ideas" sort of speech? You just flat out don't care? Wow. That's... that's... uh... hm. Yeah. Way to respect fans like me who supported DMC all the way from it's very first game. Which honestly I was still planning on buying this new game... till this boast turned up.
But no no no... I won't make this all bad. The new DMC game does have some nice qualities. While it at least tries to resemble it's old combat system (even if running at half the FPS now), it does have some interesting level layouts. That and I do like how the new weapon (even with how few of them there are) swap system works. Even though it's ripped from Ninja Theory's old work, Heavenly Sword.
So far, I'm mostly judging by the demo so this isn't my final view on the game. I'm going to fully beat the new DMC before I lay down my final judgment. Who knows... It might be better than I think of it now. Or it could be far worse. Really, I'm just venting ATM.
