I've been playing as Sureshot, a markspony, in a tabletop game of Fallout Equestria. Sadly he's kinda the AppleJack of our small party but that's not the point. I liked the story and I definitely like playing this game, so when they said to write a short backstory I did. It was kinda cruddy and I didn't really care about how well I did on it but then I decided to expand my backstory to give a deeper look into the character. So far it's only about 6000 words and doesn't even get close to accomplishing the end of chapter goal...
But yeah, remember how I said I was a really good editor? I've been editing all of the group's stories to get experience and learn what not to do in a story. So far Golden Plume's backstory was the most fun, simply because his whole backstory was nothing but an emotional rocket of sadness. I got one of the editors of a pretty big story to look over what little amount of writing I've done, he says it's decent but needs a few things fixed before it can be a 5 star story. So I've fixed what he recommended fixing, I've added more details and emotion. No longer does it feel like there's a plank standing in a house telling you his whole wooden world is burning down, it feels more organic.
Still, so far it seems like a story about a cynical pegasus who doesn't want to be near anyone, drinks all day, hates his life, and still refuses to die. He's a hero to a small town because he got lucky. I'm not making him a badass because I realize that even slight stints of badassery can put you into the Sue zone and with all of his issues it seems like he's riding the line. So instead I threw in a flashback of him in the Enclave training to be a soldier and constantly knocking himself onto the ground because he doesn't know how to balance himself to shoot his rifle. I also made the flashback a bit lighthearted to make the story less unbearably ANGST ridden.
Because wangst is not necessary.
Also, no rape or big murder scenes for him to be ashamed of as of yet. I'm going to try and play as safe as I can up until the point where his past self leaves the Enclave.
I honestly don't know why I'm sharing this with you, probably because I just need to tell myself I'm making progress. Also because I'll probably be posting this backstory on here once it's done.
